Rear tire woes...
« on: January 26, 2007, 09:08:16 PM »
Ok.....

I have a '79cb650 with stock comstar rims, and the front tire mounted great, no prob's at all.

The rear tire is being a b*tch....
I have never had this much problems mounting any tire before.

The rear tire is a 16x4 ?dunlop(if i remember right) Macadam.

Has anyone ever mounted this tire before..??

Oh... I'm not sure if it matters... my rim is not stamped with "for tubless tire" on the rim.
It is a comstar and I ran tubeless treads last year with no ill effects....

Are the rims different between the ones stamped for tubless and the ones not stamped?

And yes, i have tried soappy water(no probs with rust, it's an alluminum rim) a lube for getting auto tires onto rims from a old ford tech. i know.
Almost but not quite got it to go on with a strap around the center of the tread...(a non-ratcheting one)
and Yes, I have searched the forums... and almost everything i have come across I have tried...

hrmm....
gonna try loopiny my strap around the tire, and use a dowel to twist the strap tighter.... mabey that will do it.....
but any info will help(other than have someone else do it!)

Hey Soos,

Nothing scientific to help you, but I've installed a few Macadams lately mostly because they offer many different sizes, and they are a pure #$%* to mount. I think Michelin just plain makes them on the small size.

Keep at it.

Last time I had a problem like that, I held the bead in position with a tire iron and used my bead breaker to push the tire straight down and over the edge of the rim. It just suddenly popped on.
I hope you can understand what I attempted to describe. The bead breaker is just a home made thing from 2X4 scrap and some old left over hinges.

And no I have never used any Michelin's.

EDIT- ought to use spell checker

I have the tire on the rim....

I just can't get the beads to seat...

I have now tried almost everything..... My neighbor suggested taking the valve core out, and using a air chuck with the innards taken out so the tire will get the max. amount of air flowing into it at once.
He says this is the only way he gets his big red baloon tires to seat....

thnx

I agree with your neighbor.
But one additional point, a lube does help with seating the beads.
Soapy water , though commonly used is not the best lube but it probably is the cheapest.
You might want to try a specific tire mounting lube. I have an aerosol can made sold by Yamaha. Don't ask how it works, I haven't tried it yet.
