Spacer in 750K1 Forks?
« on: June 18, 2019, 08:15:21 PM »
Howdy all. I've been neglecting my '71 750k for a while now and I've been getting back to it with the help of three ancient shop books and the internet. The bike was purchased new by my dad in '71 and he apparently followed the trend of the day and dropped the back (blocks) and presumably raised the front up some.

Backstory out of the way, I have leaky fork seals and a front end that's taller than I like.  I disassembled the forks and found a spacer on top of the spring that is about 3.75"  long and tubes that are at or just over 26".  From what I can tell these are not stock tubes and I'm going to try to source a new set.

My question is regarding the spacer that I found. Is it required just for the longer tubes because I can't find it in any parts diagram.  My springs are within spec according to the manuals so I believe those are stock.   The spacer is cut at an angle which doesn't look very Japanese to me  ;D  everything else appears to be stock and in desperate need of cleaning up, so I'm thinking this was just new tubes and a spacer with all the other stock components. Am I right?

Yes, you are right. If you'll go back to stock tubes you will not need this spacer. I believe z1parts.net carry all stock lengths for our bikes.

Cool! By chance do you know what the stock tube length is? Is it 22 13/16" like the 73-76 models? (I know the tubes aren't interchangeable, just looking at reference lengths)

A 4 over fork tube set would have 4 inch spacers. Does the other spacer look like that ? Could have got lost and a replacement made. .

To be honest, I haven't pulled the other one apart yet.  I'll pull it apart tomorrow and see. Also possible would be the old man cutting down the spacer in an attempt to bring the front end down without purchasing new fork tubes.

Shorteningbthose spacers give you sag. You can put spacers on the damper rod to lower the fork.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ no clue. Could be a crap kit from the seventies too.  I'd ask him, but my Ouija board is in the shop.

I don't think spacers on the damper will work in my case (that was my plan)

Looks like you can use a spacer on damper.
If your forks are pretty Good you can shorten them, if you have lathe access, and are good on the lathe. Some shops want more than it is worth.

Huh, I thought it went on the damper between the end and rebound spring, but I don't have anything like that. That picture shows it in the orientation it mounts to the lower in and it looks like spring rides on that shoulder at the top.
