"A" project?
« on: June 20, 2019, 09:22:32 AM »
I got this 750 A for $50 with another bike delivered to my door. It's been sitting with a plug out and not always indoors. Most of the wiring and good stuff is toast but it hasn't been messed with a lot. No seat, crazy patina tank. I'd like to do a drag bike but am taking it one piece at a time. If the top end can be replaced maybe with an old 812 kit I have or and 836 or so I may drag race it for fun. Worst case I'll respoke the wheels, use them on something else and sell off the parts.

I got the top end off today, the #4 cylinder with no spark plug wasn't bad at all #3 has some rust and 3 have the top ring stuck. I'm thinking the cylinders might be good with a hone job. Pistons aren't really so bad if the rings were replaced.
The cam, cam holders and rockers all look good. lots of oil still in the head.
However I have a few good parts around here so I'll look into swapping them.
I still need to drop the sump to see what's in it. Possibly a head nut that vanished from my hand. No plink, tink or any sound. I thought it went into a nickel washer hole but after bounding the head around it hasn't fallen out.

#2 had rust, I went through the stash and have  75 K/ 76 K top ends and a 77F top end  I also have the f bottom end but wouldn't mind using it on the A. The oil return ports in the front appear compatible with either.
Yup, I was trying to get a head off but blew my nut. Still not found, not in the sump and magnet fishing has no result. 15 nuts in the bag 16 washers. dagnabit.

The missing nut was behind the cam chain tensioner in the cylinder, woo de F'n hoo!  Now I'll do a little flushing and cleaning and buy a gasket set. Maybe the good cycle X set.

What I really want to do is just make it run first to see if anything else is toasted. Maybe get in some pit riding and then build it for real over next winter. It's difficult to only go 836 lol. Dynoman or cycle X is calling to me!
Can you say ratomatic? Knowing me I'll overdo everything. Gotta sell some bikes first. This old Dad's been buying too much stuff.
