Remote oil pressure bracket
« on: June 20, 2019, 12:51:25 PM »
Picked this up off the internet bidding website for about $15 including a shot gauge and line. Anyone seen a bracket like this before or know who makes it? It uses the two outside valve cover bolts to attach and then ~6inch braided line to the oil galley.

This^. I can't understand why anyone would want to fit an unnecessary gadget that will increase the risk of an sudden drop of oil pressure (yes, increase) and that will distract the attention needed for a safe ride. Millions of SOHC Fours have proved you don't need one.

This isn't a question of installing or not installing one. The question is has anyone ever seen a bracket like this before, do they know who made them or is this a one-off. The argument of whether a pressure gauge is good or bad is irrelevant to the topic.

Interesting, no, I have never seen one.

As far as why, because in my opinion more information on how my engine is performing is better than less. If you decide to install one then spend the money a liquid filled on that can take the vibrations. As far as risk goes, if a supply tube fails (which happened on my 550F while on my big tour in 2017) its messy, but not fatal. My MGB has a factory mechanical OP gauge, I installed similar gauges on various cars over the years. The gauges aren't in the flow of oil, so a failed gauge is not going to starve you of oil. I just don't see any material risk in installing one if you want to.

Why would ANYONE install an oil pressure gauge?

Better informed quantitatively. At least you would know where your pressure is somewhere between 10psi and 70psi not just a light showing on or off IF the light AND sending unit actually work.

My brother had one on his bike, and the supply tube failed just like yours, and no it's not fatal, but darn inconvenient, fixing it on the side of the road with the alu wrap from a chocolat bar. And the reason the oil warning light came on was the failing of the pressure supply to the gauge.  :-X
As for the bracket, if you really think you need a gauge, put it near your other gauges, so you can see it without taking your eyes off the road....

+1

I like gauges, they tend to still work after the little indicator bulbs fail (vibration).
I like everything OEM, but I think verifying the oil pressure is north of 7.1psig before whacking the throttle WO would justify a temporary modification.

I'm thinking of the same addition also. Would prefer above and in between the upper radiuses of the tach and speedo. It wouldn't be able to permanently alter any OEM pieces though.

I would not go skinny (cheap) on the oil line/hose......

Oil gauge is great to have.  For some attention challenged wanna be bikers it's maybe too much to look down and check your oil pressure, but for anybody else, it is definitely a good thing.

But do not run it up, leave it sticking out of the galley plug - and also carry a plug in your tool kit, just to be on the safe side.

My eyes are getting old I can't make out the bracket very well . Do you have a pic of it without the gauge or from the back side. I use  gauges on most everything. I feel like a temp gauge give me better information than the idiot lights on those millions. More in line of sight is a +.

Now  I know why they build autonomous cars..
It's for people who ride bikes but can't look below the guages..  pity they can't see much on the sides of the road, lest they don't look straight ahead..

Glad I don't have that problem. I have not seen that bracket, or if I have, it's been a long long time.  Look at the way the edges are cut, sanded, milled in a continual cut, or plasma cut ?
Carry a stock cap and o ring  and it the guage or hose joints break, it's not a problem.

Cool mounting bracket! Never seen one like it.

I often install an oil press. gauge on my bikes. Especially when they have been freshly rebuilt or are “new” to me. Great to see it pop to 60-70 psi on cold start up, then settle to a nice steady number when cruising along at 4,000 rpm, hot. The Honda Workshop Manual suggests this as a test in the Maintenance Section?

The consistent feedback is reassuring and provides much more insight to “current state”, than a low pressure warning light. I always carry a spare end cap and “0” ring. Usually, after a while, the gauge comes off and moves across to my next project.

Searching my brain,  am thinking maybe Superbyke may have sold them..  or maybe Drag Specialties.

I don't understand the negativity towards guages expressed by a few on here  but we been thru this before..
If scanning your surroundings is so stressful, just don your Nomex suit, and climb inside your rollbar, airbag equipped bike and enjoy it.l

I have seen them installed using a fitting instead of the oil pressure switch and run to other locations on the bike.

Dolomite....... go for it! And toss an 1/8” npt plug in the tool bag (if it’s there, you’ll never need it).

Cool!
I have an oil pressure gauge on both my CB750's. I have always seen that as a not needed item but changed my mind last summer, very hot. Oil viscosity becomes lower and risk to not keep up the pressure in the important bearings when engine becomes really hot, common with flickering warning light at idle.
I see now the pressure direct after cold start 70 PSI  at idle, cruising pressure at 4000 rpm on 5:th gear 60 PSI when warmed up, down to 40 PSI when really warm. I'll see in time when oil has degraded and cannot keep up the pressure when warm and time to change it. I can compare how it look like with new oil.

If I should have installed one when I restored and modified my K6 1983-84 I might have seen problems in time when my engine ran really warm and finally blown 2 RC 836 pistons and  all 4 rods small-ends became blue, probably due to oil that did not keep up to its the job. Might have killed the oil a few weeks before down in Jugoslavia where the engine ran really warm.

It is better visible down at the oil galley than I thought.
My stock K2 and K6 with billet block

Edit: This made me aware of oil pressure when hot and oil pump upgrade such as new rotors from MessnerMoto. My K6 has a pump with those rotors installed. I noted improvement direct a warm day, oil temp in oil tnak 110*C. Not possible so far to get flickering oil pressure warning at low idle, engine stops before that.

My K2 will get a pump that has new rotors at next service/rebuild. That pump is soaked in oil resting in a plastic bag.

Lathe up a spacer with a groove for between guage and bracket it would look killer.
If I were making that I would run #3 line.
If anyone is interested in these,  I could maybe make a few... providing the OP was not going to do so.

No I don't have the tools to make them. Perhaps this was a bracket someone made in their home? I was debating making myself one based off the original as a template that had two gauge mounts, at the front and back to run a mechanical oil temp from a tee at the galley to get both pressure and temperature but that is a future project.

As far as line size, I had a lot of difficulty finding 6-8" braided line that was rated for oil or didn't need 4 different adapters. I finally found that one which is about 8" from drag line specialities

I need to get back in the game, if i do it, they will be nice.
I can measure off one of my bikes here. How much was the liquid filled guage ?
