I've never done anything like this, but you might find this site of interest. He discusses a number of restoration issues, including engine paints and painting. Good luck.

That's the exact one I was going to recommend.  VHT paint is very good stuff.  If you can't read the part number on the can it's SP-127, Universal Aluminum.  If you can't find it at your regular parts store, check with a hot rod parts store.  That's where mine came from.

after a carb rebuild, I masked and painted my engine and a new header i got recently. I painted the lower engine case and oil filter with duplicolorHigh Heat (500 deg.) universal aluminium, and finished with two coats of duplicolor High heat clear. when this paint had begun to set, I masked the lower end off and shot the jugs head and valve cover with High heat (1000 deg.) flat black. I shot the sides of the fins and valve cover with the clear.

after a running bake in process it looks pretty good. we'll see how it holds up.

You only mention after a carb rebuild, did you do this with the engine 'in the frame,' or out of the frame?

yeah in or out?... i have to pull the motor on the F1 to change the head, but was wondering what you used to clean the road grimmme and oil and stuff off the motor b4 you painted?...  i am using the VHT stuff, i had used it on a motor in my Holden HQ, and it was great, so figured i would give it a run on the bike, i know tha motor in the car was ok, it was chemical dipped, and stripped... but again how dod you clean up the motor for the spray.... while the head is off and going to spray it with universal aluminium, and put it inthe oven for half an hour...(missus said it was alright), then mask the bores off and paint the cylinders, but my head gasket was leaking on the 836 kit, and have a little burnt on oil on the jugs... just want to make sure i clean it with the right stuff... nothering worse than the look of flaking paint on a motor... peace

You guys might want to check out POR-15 products.  They have a bunch of stuff just related to cleaning/prepping/painting engines.  They also have engine paint in a bunch of different colors if you're interested in having an orange engine for example.

Here is the page for their engine paints:

Just a note. If you find a suitable paint for the engine casings, the length of time the finish will last will depend on the preperation. Alluminium oxidises and will push the paint off from the inside regardless of how much or how well it was put on. It is suggested that an etching primer would greatly help in the long term. Particularly in the front where the casings are subject to road grime and wet.

I painted the engine out of the frame. So far with the exception of some slight peeling on the dyno casing, it looks pretty good. clean well before painting and taktime masking.

spray half as much as you think you have to.my peeling is probably the result of a heavy color and clear coat.
