Running Lean at 45-60 mph
« on: June 26, 2019, 09:04:37 AM »

Hey all,

Currently on a loooooong trip (several weeks) on my 78 750 Supersport. A couple days ago I started having an issue where the bike would bog down lose power, and occasionally surge back to life around 45mph. A twist of the wrist and it would be up and moving again but staying around that 45mph mark was just a chore. Choke would clear the issue up, unless of course I had to come to a stop, at which point the bike would die if choke was still on.

In the past few days I've tried pulling the carbs (several times) and each time found the jets clean as a whistle. I've tried cleaning and re-oiling the pod filters as well. Inline filter and internal tank filters looked great and flowed well. I did also back off the fuel mixture screws about half a turn to see if that would help. It didn't. For half of one day the issue was resolved by duct tape over the outer two pods and keeping my knees tucked close to the pods.

However, the problem has not gone away and is on fact a bit worse now. Instead of surging, the bike just wants to bog to zero power. And the dead range is now from 45 to about 65 mph. It happens in both 4th and 5th gear, I'd guess around 1/4 throttle maybe?

I've descended in elevation about 700 feet from where the bike was jetted (and ran pretty darn good), but I feel like that shouldnt be enough to cause problems.

I'm debating just bringing it to a shop in the city I'm in now (Austin, T ), but don't really wanna drop the cash and lose a day of riding. So any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Just read your post.  Will tell you I fried two pistons running lean.  On 200 mile trip, 175 miles into it, started losing power.  Pulled over and pool of oil on road.  Trailer home and took it apart to find the damage.  All I'm saying is that moving on without finding problem, could cause a problem.  If youre stuck, cutting the frame and putting in a no-weld frame kit later could cut the cost.  Not trying to scare you but #$%* happens.  GOOD LUCK

Fuel level in the float bowls?

What do the plugs look like at whatever??? rpm range you are running at those mphs?

Have you tried raising the needles away from the seats by lowering the clip one notch on the needles?

Clogged tank vent on fuel cap can cause sudden lack of fuel.
I had one completely rusted. Another new aftermarket had too wide rubber gasket on inside cover the vent hole causing underpressure in tank.
Tanks the earlier style, K2, K4.

I'm sure vent problem can happen all where the vent is located.
I opened my caps, fuel flowed again.

Phoenix, that does scare me! For what it's worth, ive crossed Louisiana  with it running like that, but I don't think I'll be moving further than Austin without solving this one. No more good places to stop till El Paso, really.

The float level is a bit low. I can for sure try adjusting that. Plugs were ghost white the time I pulled them without the choke on. I haven't tried pulling them again after running it on the choke/trying to avoid those throttle positions.

Haven't tried raising needles. These are the PD42A carbs, so I'd need shims.

I can sure try cracking the gas cap, or even pulling it apart as well.

So, then y'all are thinking this isn't an elevation issue?
