I've been around here long enough to know that conventional wisdom (and general consensus) dictates that when tearing down/rebuilding, the factory service manual is the bible to be adhered to. So to be sure I had everything I needed, I've bought copies of both the FSM and the Clymer version for the CA/CL's.
Turns out they're both pretty much useless when it comes to torque specs and TBH, the FSM is one of the most badly put together pieces of reference material I've ever used. It's useful if you want to know some of the basic differences between the models, and the service/wear limits on components, but it's incredibly vague when it comes to teardown/reassembly procedures and misses out huge swathes of detail. The Clymer's a bit better - it contains considerably clearer written instruction - but at least 30-40% of it is copies of tables from the the FSM.
Anyways, enough moaning. I've only managed to find about two torque specs in both manuals, and neither are anything to do with what I'm trying to sort out. Right now, I'm in the process of putting the case halves back together and I've got no idea how much force to use when tightening the fasteners. I've got several other manuals (including a bloody great Chilton's multi-model behemoth) and I was hoping I could glean something useful from there. But the method of fastening the cases is different to most other models of the time. The vast majority of fasteners are nuts onto studs and I'm a bit mystified as to how far I need to go.
I'm really not in the mood for a visit from Brute Force and his trusty sidekick Ignorance, and I'm a bit paranoid about doing some sort of damage to the cases. So any ideas where I can find the torque specs, or where I should be looking?
Thanks all.
