Decent tires 76, 750F
« on: June 28, 2019, 04:49:54 PM »
I've had no luck with cheap tires. I'm ready to buy whatever it ta takes for decent ride and smooth balance.  I've had shinko most recent, get flat spots while sitting idle, don't like pattern of tread, I've had Kendra, they got old and hard. I'm ready to buy a decent set, at reasonable cost. Current 100-90-19 Front and 120-90-18 Rear. 76 cb750f, 836,small cams, stock gearing.
Bike starts and runs great, but the ride sucks. New 1in shorter haygons on rear, new progressive springs in front. Bike still feels hard, stiff, not near as plesant as my gs750 of 1981 is to ride. It has Pirelli on it. Anyway I'm going to replace the shinko with something, that I hope rides better. I'm not interested in knee dragging, or max at drag race traction, just a decent soft ride. Don't really care about how they last!
Looking for recomandations. And or reviews on different options.
Please help me not make a mistake again? The HD guys recommended the shinkos.
I've benn looking at Bridgestone , they have good reviews?
I have them mounted on 78 cb750 mag wheelers, but with tubes.
Help.
Thanks, 61 year old hillbilly that graduated high school in 76, my bike now is the 1 everyone wanted , when we coulnt afford it,lol.
FYI, the sleeper 836, now tames those pesky gs750s,lol.
They dont understand!(My secret).

Avon Roadrider. My favorites.
A close second is the Bridgestone Battleaxe series, if they are still around.
A distant third, because of less sidewall grip in deep corners (in the mountains) but excellent tires for general touring, are the German-made Continentals (NOT the "Conti" Chinese knockoffs).

I have Metzler Sport Klassics on mine and after 700 miles the past few days including riding the Dragon and a couple hundred miles of curvy roads in Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Carolinas I can't recommend them enough.

Have used on cb750's and approved
   Metzeler Lazertec
   Pirelli Sport Demons
   Dunlop d404 (I think?)
   Avon Roadriders
Used and not approved?
   Shinko
Just my opinions

Really though your tire demands posted above should be easily met by just about any tire available for these bikes.  Perhaps the problem really lies with your tire pressure or suspension set up?  If the ride is too hard, do what you can to adjust it softer.  Tires balanced properly?

Also, even though 100/90/19 and 120/90/18 are nominally the same, I have found that true 3.25x19 and 4.0x18 really work the best on stock size rims with these cb750s...not really sure why

I liked the roadriders on my 76 F. didn't keep it long enough to wear them out, sold it for sandcast money.

Ordered a Pirelli mt66, tt, just like on my gs, new tube and well see. Got the front first, seems the most bounce from front.
Any way of telling for sure which tire is causing ,like out of ballence bounce, right between 40-50mph. Where u ride a lot on county back roads. Mine seems to be front, but when doubling, even my 70lb son, it gets some better. I've checked and adjusted all the usual , neck bearings, swing arm, wheel bearings, axle nuts, alignment, nothing seems to help the bounce.
Thanks.
Even added Dana beads, no change. Can't see any out of round when hand spinning?
It does have tumblers tires with tubes, but I've done that successfully many times before.

Tubeless tires can be very difficult to get the bead seated evenly all the way around the rim.  If it is not all the way seatef, of course, you end up with an out of round condition.  Most tires will have a reveal line cast in, so that when the bead is seated all the way, you can see it compared to the edge of the rim.

I'm hoping it was the tubeles tire fault. Got 2 tubes and a Pirelli for 100$.
I'd really benn neglecting  my CB, and riding my GS, because of the bounce.
Rode a pleasant 20 mile yesterday, my 8 year old behind me, mostly 60mph ride.

Avon, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop and IRC.  I have all these tires on various bikes for different reasons and like them all.

I dont buy Chinese tires.

If you insist on oversize tires on narrow rims, you'll have to up the tire pressure to make the tread patch stable and centered on the rim.  This will also make the tires flat spot at center of tread.  This has to do with sidewall angle tread to rim.  The more angle, the more air pressure is required to stabilize the contact patch with respect to rim.

Use Honda recommended tire sizes on stock rims.  You can still drag bits of bike on the road in turns.  And get much better tire wear.

I happen to favor Metzelers on my bikes.  Though, I do refrain from knee dragging these days.

No.   Not in name brand tires.   I'm using the 4.00x18.  Doesn't seem to need much extra pressure for sidewall stiffening.  The sidewall angle is only 6.6% larger than original.  It is also what the CB750 had on it when using 1.85 inch rims, IIRC.
It's probably a little heavier than the true stock size though.

Been awhile.  Maybe wrong.  But, I thought the comstars on my Cb750 F models were 1.85 front and rear.  Recall being surprised at that.
Too lazy to go look and verify right now.  3/4 acre lawn and yard work in progress.  (sounds of heavy breathing)

Bikebandit on the ball, tire in and mounted, hope for test before days end. Easiest tire I've ever mounted, layed in sun, 90 hear today, on black garbage can couple hours. It went on super easy, ring around edge of tire evenly visible. Still got a spin on Jack stands for balance and out of round check, but if all is well ill be getting 1 for the rear as also.

Pirelli mt66. Tube type. Route on side. 67$ + freight if u buy less than 100$,(threw in set grips,2 tubes, got free ship). Ballance on stand, shown bout 1/4oz out. I did not use any weight. Was tired, and late, so only 8 mile test drive. Rode a lot between 40-50mph, where the bounce was, just a hint of a bounce ocasionally . When back to shop, i cut the old tube ,removed ballence beads and installed in new tire. Haven't rode yet, report back after work tonight. So far, I like it, no more bouncing front end.

Beads should not be needed, you need to correct the issue.

Do you have them front and rear on the 750?
I’ve always wondered how a more modern style tire would work on our old style rims, frames, etc.

I've used them on a couple bikes, they worked great on my Royal Enfield but in my opinion overwhelmed by the weight and power of my FJ1200
