This reply is related to "hanging off"

So, from my VERY limited experience riding a wussy little 350 with cheng shin tires,
When I am feeling good, I like to rev the bike and hit the twisties on the east side of the Schuylkill River.
What I have found is that if I keep my head up in relation to my body position, and keep looking where I want to go, the bike handles WAY better.
If I keep my head in alignment with my body lean angle, (head leaning inside) it feels much more dangerous and unstable.

I try to mimic the riding position from pictures of guys leaning their bikes way over.  See previous posts for pic of the mind #$%* bike.
His head is up, eyes fixed on the exit target. Is his ass on the seat or off to the inside of the corner? I don't know.
It seems to me if I keep my body centered over the bike, head up, and push only the bike into the turn, I have better control.
Is this subjective or objective truth?
What I mean is I am trying to keep my body and weight centered ove the bike, not hanging off to the inside.
What is the deal on this?
 ???

This would be an example of riding within your skill level according to your bikes capabilities, keep it up and you'll enjoy riding for many years.  Moving your body off the seat to the inside of the turn to lessen the lean angle of the bike using your body weight to counter balance the bike allowing the tires a greater contact patch with the ground.  More bike lean from center equals less contact patch.

Too many people look at COOL pics or videos of bike races thinking that they are using their body weight to 'pull' the bike down, this is a dangerous misinterpretation leading to them becoming headline news.

But this is a whole new thread to explain in detail.

...It's hard to convey over the enternet, but believe me when I say that:  I did it all flawlessly (minus my judgement) and I am quiet confident to say that no one on earth could take my bike on that curve and at that speed and be able to keep it up...
.... By the way, I am really enjoying this.  Keep'em comming! ;D

You messed up and you are blaming the bike.  You have built a big brick wall between yourself and enlightenment.

" you must "hang off" to distribute weight properly.  (at high speed) "

Thank you. Now you're getting what I'm saying.  In keeping with Ofreen's wisdom above, I feel like you're confusing stupidity with skill and bravado.

Folks, if I'm wrong here, i apologize.  I'm just telling what I've learned and seen. Maybe I misinterpreted.  If so, perhaps someone will straighten me out...?

Or..... at low speed in a tight turn, case in point, the Key Hole at Mid-Ohio.  Durring supersport shootout the riders  can't go over 35-40mph around it, and their hanging way out there.

Whats the argument again??? ???

The fact is anyone of us could take our old bikes (or any bike for that matter) and try the knee-dragging "trick" around a corner at 30mph and Im sure 95% of us would follow your example and fall off. The reason we DONT do this is because it seems we know better not to try such a "trick" on a street road. Most of us have many years of riding experience to tell us why bother wrecking our bikes.

It dosent take guts to try it, more a lack of knowledge/skill level a priori. I appreciate the fact you told your story here but I dont know why you woud expect instant sympathy for something that is akin to pulling wheelies on the highway. Why not go improve your skills on a track rather than put others (and yourself) at risk on the street.

cheers
Andy

All I can say is JP blames the bike and then himself as an after thought.  Did you not ever notice streets are not smooth?  You have #$%*ty tires on and probably a stock suspension and decide to try something like dragging a knee? What in your mind told you this would work? I mean we all know draggin can be done on our bikes IF they are wearing good rubber and have a good suspension. So your bike was clearly not up to doing what you wanted to do. I dotn see how this was the bikes fault. I may have only ridden a couple of different bikes in my life but I can safely say I have never seen a bike roll into a store and pick out the tires it will roll on. The rider has to do that.

Hey great you tried to drag a knee, Nothing wrong with that, your error was in trying to do it when you KNOW your bike was not set up for it. But wait that right, I have not busines saying anything since I have not tried it myself. And I probably wont either. I have family to take care and that is more important than draggin some knee in a corner no one cares about.  So maybe next time you decide to do this, you will think about your bikes setup and then can make a choice that is not "in the heat of the moment".

Hear that everyone, you want to do things like this, make sure your bike is set up for it.

Slow, Look, Push, Roll.  I'll push the handlebars to the ground before I start getting my ass off of the seat.

It's when people start riding like they're on a GP bike that they get killed.  I'm happy riding like I'm on a 30 year old machine.

Watch this vid:

http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=58n0Sjuw4Ek

when i was in japan last, i saw these guys doing insane stunt stuff kind of resembling the riding on that video, but on the streets in tokyo. they would cut the handle bars straight to the side (while riding straight), and just when they bike was almost laid over, they'd throttle it and it would stand back up again. i can't really explain it, as i was baffled at just how they were physically managing it at all. blew away stunt riding videos i've seen in the states with stoppies, and wheelies, etc.

Yeah 5 pages and the title wasnt even correct - if you fall of your bike when TRYING to drag you knee can that really be counted as "success" or is that merely a crash and burn?  ::)

You should have seen the one on counter-steering!  Finally got Steve to try it, though.  Changed his life.

That video is obviously bogus.  There's no way they could do any of that without  dragging a knee.

But I know of one guy that could beat all of them on his first try. Unless, of course, his bike made an error in judgement and rode itself into a sudden gravity storm.

Cheeze n' Rice!  Some of you guys really have a hardon for this :o

Those where some really nice looking 550's in that video.  Not at all like mine ???

Kidding aside, that was an awesome video- thanks for posting it Einyodeler.

But really, 70 posts trying to defend the honor of 32 year old technology, why?  I feel like I told a racist joke during the million man march......so deffensive.  Whether I should have tried it or not isn't the point, the point has become wheather it was my failure or the bikes.  Would you believe me if I said that I went back and did it on a modern sportbike?  I bet you would.  I am no where near as good as the riders in the video, but I am no rookie either.  I have participated in many forms of racing.  I know the difference between machine error and rider error.  My only error was judgement.  The bike could not turn as sharp as I needed it to.  Why is that difficult to believe?  Until one of you guys step up and do it, back off.  Some of you have taken a thread ment to make light of my accident and make people laugh, into a thread that is insulting.

I will not back off JP. What you did was outright stupid and you know it and are just trying to foist blame on the bike. These bikes are well known for being able to scrape the pegs and exhaust easily IF set up right. Clearly you dont worry about setup though. The bike can only do so much and a lot of that is placed upon the rider and how he sets the bike up. You did a half-assed job and now get all defensive when people cal you on it and don't believe your smokescreen story.  And if you bothered to read all the posts, you would see that others are referring to having done it and with success.  Set your bike up right and try it again, probably have much better results.
