Wire question coming out of motor
« on: July 02, 2019, 05:42:02 PM »
Ok so I got this other motor for the 76 550.
I'm no wire expert whatsoever.
So this attachment on the new motor is different then what I had on before. It's kinda like a plug.
The small plugs before  on old engine ( pic included) is like nice double tip to insert into these plastic sleeves and inside the hollow metal circle thing..lol sorry I have no idea what this is called.
But the new one with the plug clamp is bit different. Is this ok to just smash them together? Should I crimp it tight or what am I doing with thhese wires? Can I remove these plastic sleeves? Should this be ok  you think?

In the photos the plug is from the new motor.. obviously you can tell my old motor pic..and the plastic plugs are coming from the bike now.
Any help in this would be great.

The green plug is not standard for any Honda engine and must have been modified by a po. The blue and yellow wires go to the ignition contacts and you can easily transfer them from one to the other as they are only held by a small bolt at the contact end. WARNING make sure you know the order of things at the contact end and put them back in the same order!

The blue and yellow come from the points. The connection on the side of the bike, near the rear brake switch, goes to the coils.
As stated, the green connectors aren't stock. They're coming from the points cover on the new engine? Or is it coming from the frame/coils? Hard to tell from your picture.  Have you checked to see if it still has points?

Not a Honda connector, convert it back to japanese bullets and sockets.

Maybe I'm thick, but it's still unclear to me whether that's on the bike or the engine.

Regardless,  you need to get the "signal" from the points (or electronic ignition) to the coils. Make connections to make that happen.

It appears to have the woven shielding so I'd guess it's the engine side. That's what is known as a weather pak connector. You can get them at parts stores but get a bit complicated. I'd get the proper bullet ends from Vintage Connections.com. and crimp them on.  Be sure they are the Honda size which is smaller than the other Japanese bikes.

So I just cut the plug off and then get some wire exposed. Get those fittings and crimp and should be good?

When I was looking I wasn't really quite sure what to get. Do I really need all these? Should I buy a box of these? I saw a couple single ones but I didn't understand or know which one I should get. This set is around $50. Should I get this?

Why dont you just swap the entire points plate complete from the old motor into the new motor?

Or splice in/solder the old connectors onto the new wires?

Idk...I thought since this was a fresh motor to just leave as is. I guess I could do that. I would have to reset the points and double check that as well huh?  So much #$%* I have been dealing with this damn motor. .a much well learned learning experience. I should have never bought this motor. I feel like the bike isn't gonna work cause I really am no mechanic. :/

Have you checked to see what's on the other end of those plugs? Does the new motor have points?

A few years ago I was in the position you are in now...yes the kit and crimper from vintage connections is expensive, but you didn't get this bike because you wanted a cheap ride.  Buy the kit, waste a few terminals learning how to make a perfect crimp and be proud of your accomplisment.  Then start studying the Color wiring diagram of your bike and where the wires go because you will get another opportunity to solve an electrical issue.  Almost all of the electrical connections on your bike are of the same style, you should get comfortable dealing with them.  Next time it seems like an electrical issue, you can tell yourself "that's no big deal."

Yea I just took the other one off and replaced with the plate I had on before.
I just didn't wanna mess with more stuff atm. My question now is this point plate was tuned just before I got this other motor in. Probably about month ago it was tunned on my old motor. Will I have to tune this again since it's different motor or will this be ok you think?

Wiring and stuff like that scares me. I know should learn but I feel like I'm already for myself getting deeper then I'm comfortable doing. I'm afraid all this work I'm doing is gonna be for nothing. I hope this motor runs for me. He said all the gaskets were replaced and so idk. I'm just taking his word for it. But when I noticed some red flags on the motor it questioned everything for me.
Will see what happens.
