That's a really really bad thing to happen mate, best of luck healing her.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Most of the engine parts were "the best" out of 2 1/2 engines I started with.  All he said was a wrist pin gave out. He indicated it was not something he had seen before, but sh*t happens :P

He scrounging around to find me what I need and will do the re- & -re at his place since it's spread all over his shop at this point anyway.  He is cutting me some slack on his rate to do it again. Once he has the engine back together I'll drop over and give it a quick paint as all the petcock fuel spills before it cured made a bit of a mess of it.

Don't need anything but money ;D

Good evening gentlemen.
Picked up the bike today with my 2nd attempt at this 836 motor.

I will get into the particulars of what has been done at a later date. Right now I have a bike that runs absolutely awesome without the body kit on "gas still in carbs". As soon as I put the Tracy body kit on I loose spark from both outside plugs????????

I really wanted to ride this tonight after what this has cost me..............any ideas. This kit is a tight fit. I don't even have room for proper clamps on the petcock, I have to use zip ties. So removing the kit after assembly is a real start from scratch pain in the ASS!

I'm headed back out to the garage but I will be back for any thoughts on this.

Body must be pushing off a wire to the coil, sounds like.

Found it!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems he re-routed the ignition switch wires and the coil wires and they were getting squished.......... ::)
Found it by running of the bottle and manipulating wires all around.

It's all good, I'm home.
WOW!  Wow!  While the guy who built the motor had my bike he removed all the baffles from new Yoshi exhaust, said it needed to breath............reset the carb needles and synced it.

He didn't like the way my carbs were just hanging there, so fitted the bike with a support rod from above to hold it all in place rock solid. I'll take some photos of the set up next time I remove the body kit.  This tightening up of carbs to engine made the room for gas lines off petcock very tight. Carbs are now catching on fuel lines a bit. Makes every shift a "Power shift" :o  I'll need to deal with that as it's a bit scary heading into a tight corner with a bit of power still on...........

Kathleen says she will see if her feet touch the ground on my 78K.
If so we could be up to some major miles together at a good speed ;D

What dates are you looking at again?

I promise I will at least put it on my calender this time ;D

I still can't see riding the Tracy that far, Seems that to much concentration is necessary to ride it.       It's not a cruiser................ ;)

I was out on the track again yesterday, and watching the video from instructor  behind me I still see major blue smoke from the pipe on major compression deceleration into a hairpin corner and again on getting into the throttle.

Engine builder had no problems with me on the track.  200 miles on new rebuild.

Should I be concerned? Or is this still part of the valves seating "what ever that means"?

P.S. Runs great, but still not charging correctly. Battery went down and headlight wasn't even hooked up?

If it was me I wouldnt be racing my recently rebuilt engine just yet. While its fine to blip the throttle now and again after rebuild hitting the high RPMS, your descriptions are of wide-open, screaming, high rpm loads followed by sudden near stops....a lot of stress on a fresh rebuild.......however having said that Mec is the one you should be asking with his fresh Egli...he was racing it pretty soon afterwards so Id check with him....or ask Mindler....I am sure he has some experience of this.....Ive had 3 or 4 rebuild and while I didnt baby them, I didnt go crazy either.....never any blue smoke (only head leaks  ::))

good luck
Andy

The old guys used to tell me to break 'em in like you're going to ride 'em. IMO main thing is to give it the initial miles to make sure the mechanics are OK then work your way into it. Gotta get the rings seated somehow so the oil doesn't sneak past. Do you know what kind of clearance he bored to? I'd assume he fitted valve seals on the exhausts considering the early engines did not have them?! Don't forget to do a post break-in oil change.

How about the Gabriola 500? 500 laps around the island which will require varying speeds.

I did ride it for a few days before track time although he said it's track ready (now) when I picked it up.

The video looked hideous , Looked like an Indian.........smoke signals at every corner ::)

That's not good Derek, after your first ride (when it's burning off any excess oil used during the assembly) a properly built engine with correct piston-to-cylinder clearances shouldn't be burning any oil, period.

Pull your plugs and examine them, if they look "oily black" as opposed to "rich mixture black", do a compression check, with a fresh 836cc engine you'd expect upwards of 180 psi per cylinder, with a 5% max variation.

If it's less than that, pour a little oil in each cylinder via the spark plug hole and check again. If the compression figures come up, it's your piston-to-cylinder clearance that's at issue, or if it's just one or two cylinders you might have some busted rings due to poor assembly technique. If there's no difference at all, it's a valve/valve guide sealing problem.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to take it to somebody other than your man who built it initially, I suspect that he's no expert..............  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Make sure you run your engine to normal running temps before you take any readings Derek, or you'll get false results. Also, as you're dropping out your oil, smell it, if it smells like your exhaust, you're getting "blow-by" getting past your rings into your crankcases. Did you say once before that you were getting smoke coming out of your crankcase breather? That's another symptom of ring seal failure. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Nice clips Derek, beautiful scenery, you're a lucky boy! But whats that godawful rattle when you back it off? You got a stuffed bearing in your gearbox? Cheers, Terry. ;D
