Topic: Valve cover leak cb500

Uhhh.  I’m confused.  I just put new o-rings on the sidecover and this happened within 1 minute of starting my 73 cb500.  Is there something I'm missing about how the O-rings go on?

the o-rings go on the 2 pins on the end caps which are pushed into those 2 holes where the rocker shafts go.

also, the bracket that the end cap is screwed to, is fastened to the cover with a bolt. you need a crush washer on the bolt, both underneath and on top of the bracket.

Ohhhh I definitely don't have crush washers on the bolt.  I'll pick some up.

Is there any way the O-rings can roll too far onto the pins and not fully seal?  My inclination is that the oil is coming out of those holes based on how much comes out at such a fast rate.

Steel washer between bolt head and bracket, soft alloy washer between bracket and cove. This is the main feed to the cam so oil will pee out if its not sealed.
The O rings you are talking about go into grooves on the pins that are in the end cap and seal on the outside of the hole, you DO NOT just put them in the hole.

For sure.  I definitely put the orings in the grooves on the pins.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t a common goof up.  Seems like the hex bolt that holds the bracket there isn’t tightening correctly from lack of washers, is stripped out, or both.  Thanks!

We did it boys.  Thanks to you I just ran it for about 10 minutes with no leak (it had been happening within 30 seconds).  The hex screw for that little cover is definitely stripped at the bottom but with both washers I was able to juuuuuust tighten it enough until I invest in a timesert. 

Oh also after looking at it again I realized you really can't put those o-rings on the wrong way.  I was misremembering the post length while responding earlier!
