2020 get together
« on: July 15, 2019, 11:46:10 AM »
Mooshie reached out to me about planning an event for 2020 similar to what I did in 2017. I have asked for some changes to be made to the SOHC World Tour part of the forum so I can start a thread down there, but in the mean time I thought I would float something here to get people thinking.

Now that Dash, her 550 is built she wants to ride back east again and do the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. Since I did part of the Parkway myself this year on my trip I completely understand.

What I am thinking right now is an event somewhere in the area SE of Knoxville, TN near the North Carolina border. I spent a couple days in this area and it offers great riding (The Dragon is about an hour away), amazing scenery, and lots of camping options.

Just drove through there 3 hours ago. Entered US64E 20 miles north of Chattanooga on I-75. Cherokee National Forest. Ocoee River Scenic Byway. It IS scenic! 45mph speed limit so it is "civilized" as far as traffic. Ocoee dams and lakes. It crosses into NC. Nice easily manageable twisties. Looks to be a great ride!

That was my experience with most of the many twisting 2 lanes I rode. Smooth roads, moderate speed limits, not a lot of traffic. Fun to ride without needing to push the pace.

They enforce the speed limit on the parkway fairly vigorously. It is a beautiful ride or drive and traffic is not too bad as long as it is not fall foliage season.

July and August bring heat showers and more rain typically than say September...but anymore you cannot depend upon past history as the weather is more unpredictable in recent years.

Of late the temps here in NE TN have been in mid to high 80s and low 90s with high humidity making it really unpleasant to ride ATGATT during the heat of the day. It makes it very unpleasant to ride unless it is early in the morning or just before dark, about a hour before sunset. The heat and humidity can be threatening for heat exhaustion.

Just a tidbit to consider when scheduling the get together.

Since Lisa wants to do another coast-to-coast-to-coast ride, she should meet up with as many members as possible along the way. Think of her as the 2020 Godzilla! ;D ;D ;D

That would be great and it’s in my neck of the woods. I’ve ridden the BRP numerous time from beginning to end and it is beautiful. There a some challenging rides along the BRP also. The Dragon is cool if you hit it early in the week and in the mornings, otherwise you risk injury or your life from not only cars, but other riders, Jerry Griffith can verify that fact. I would glad lead some rides, I’m located in Atlanta and can get up to the hills in a no time.

If there's a leg that goes through my area, I can offer a place to crash, some tools, maybe a cookout and some cold beverages.

So, what month are we entertaining to enjoy this area?  Would help to start nailing it down.  Lots of cabin rentals in the area could make for a good place to stay. Some are quite large and when costs are shared by the group they would be more affordable.

David,

I'm nots sure what Lisa was thinking for her trip. Let me reach out. The late June/early July window that I used for my trip this year brought me some excellent weather and reasonable temperatures, so I would personally target then. But at this point it could really be anytime between the beginning of June and the end of August.

I followed up with Lisa, it is too early to commit, but she had been thinking a late Summer/early Fall trip, end of September into beginning of October.

Personally I can do that time frame, and it should reduce the number of tourists in the area we are talking about since kids will be back in school and Thanksgiving is still 2 months away. I rather like this time frame as the weather should be very pleasant for both riding and for hiking through some of the fantastic national and state parks.

That is peak leave season, so traffic will be worse than normal. Expect slow traffic on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Really? I was looking at the maps and it said peak season was closer to November.

You are right... I am a couple weeks off...they start changing at higher elevations around the first week of October. This year they think they will peak around mid October in the higher elevations working their way down into valleys through mid November.

Cooler temps in the mountains in late Sept...unless there is a heat wave you won't be needing summer riding gear in the mornings. Definitely layers for the riding with nice ambient temps unless it is rainy.

Sunrise first week of October is around 7:30am and sunset around 7:15pm.
With large deer population you don't want to be riding a lot at night in their habitat.

IF I can do this then we can probably have a really nice place to overnight on Lake Rabun in NE GA mountains close to TN and NC.

It figures that an event very close to me occurs after I move... Now I am a couple hours from the Smoky Mountains.  Moving back to Tucson late next month.  I will plan to attend.  Depending upon Lisa's route I may ride along with her part of the way back here to TN next year.
