Now that we are officially in 2020 I am going to push this thread back up to the front page. I'm going to do some research over the next couple weeks and will post my thoughts/ideas about locations.

Generally speaking I am targeting the area near the borders of Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina. Mooshie wants to ride the full Blue Ridge Parkway, so my thought is someplace near the beginning of that in Cherokee NC. Both Maggie Valley (home of the Wheels Through Time museum, which I visited last summer) and The Dragon are within an hour's ride of Cherokee, and I can say from personal experience there are dozens of great rides in the area along with some really good food and great people.

I did most of my riding in the area, including the Dragon, on weekdays when traffic was light. Date wise I am thinking sometime in early September, after the kids are back in school, when most Summer vacation trips are over and roads should be emptier. I don't have kids myself, so have the flexibility to take vacation then, but I understand not everybody does.

We had about 20 people at the event I organized in Colorado in 2017, which was a really good size and I am hoping we can get a similar number for this one. Everyone is welcome regardless of what you ride or drive (or both, a couple members trailered bikes to the event), so don't let your lack of a running SOHC4 deter you, and feel free to bring friends.

I still regret missing Colorado, I was at Sturgis with a noisy belt tensioner bearing on my gl and elected to head for home. I'll do my best to attend this one unless it's a race weekend and we're contending for a points lead.

I found this place tonight and it looks very promising, good location, several cabin options for those folks that don't like to camp *cough*mooshie*cough* :)

Since Mooshie is thinking of doing another cross-country ride, perhaps we should adjust our personal schedules around hers? Join in, ride for as far as you like, just like the relays? I could go for an spring ride to Tucson, and Dennis (Old Scrambler) may be in the area at that time?

Maybe I’ll drive or ride everywhere from now on...
I had a red carpet treatment welcoming back to flying after a long absence (many years) from flying in good 'ole USA courtesy of an airline beginning with a letter d and everyone's favorite Gov't group everyone loves, the TSA. Brand-new luggage that had been purchased not quite 8 days earlier (lacked about 7 hours from being a full 8 days. So, that makes the damage injuries to a newborn?)
Baggage had zipper destroyed and TSA approved lock broken. Stuff lost out of checked bag which primarily was Christmas gifts. Things fell out most likely...but one item was missing from the zipped up compartment side.
If that weren't bad enough, luggage repair people shipped it either to wrong address or wrong speed TWICE. Bag is still in transit on its way back to repair facility in Dallas area (Texas) before they correctly route it back home. Bags have literally, no exaggerating, travelled twice as far as I have this holiday. I wish I had signed them up for UPS's frequent flyer/traveler mileage program!

TSA took nearly every item out of my carry on and I enjoyed a full body scan and then full body pat-down before I left Tucson. So, I was denied the cavity search which would have made it the full TSA red carpet treatment welcoming me to flying in the post 9/11 & numerous terrorist attempts throughout the world since 9/11.

So, I will be traveling back East this year for several significant events. A wedding of my nephew's and my niece's graduation from Family Practice residency.
The holiday travel experience was so bad that I stated out loud while repacking my carry-on suitcase as quickly as I could, "I think I'll drive next time." That was before things really began to snowball.
A one-way trip would be three days driving over 600 miles daily. Avoiding interstate highways looking ahead to the 3020 get together to Cherokee, NC from my place here in AZ adds another 300 miles to the distance (nearly 2200 miles as opposed to be from my place to Bristol TN/VA distance for calculation and to see what to expect for miles on a trip across the country. It will be a 12 hour car drive from my nephew's wedding location the  north of Boston.

So, Mooshie...I will tag along with you and others from this direction if I can swing it. Thinking of trailering the bike but won’t be if my back doesn’t get better than it has been. Riding the bike is far less painful than time in the car. In fact my back feels better when riding and it is therapeutic mentally, emotionally and physically... Now if I could  get rid of all those drivers out to get me... and the rain which we need and get more of in winter and spring it would be perfect. But translate all those drivers to cars and OH MY!  Traffic problems would be far different. Roads wouldn’t have the wear they do now either. If they were instantly new it would take a long time for them to wear out...the weather would do it long before a million motorcycles would.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be there since I’m located in Atlanta and can get to Cherokee or wherever you decide to meet up. I love the BRP, the views never get old and there are quite a few fun rides along the way while on it.

Joe, during my initial discussions last Fall with Mooshie we were thinking towards the end of September. By that point the tourist flow should have slowed substantially because kids are back in school and it will still be another month until the Fall colors really kick in. Temps should be reasonable too. I would think similar to what I saw at the end of June/beginning of July.

Probably without the sidecar, can't imagine 500 miles with that thing.

Okay, I FINALLY found the thread...one must wonder how I made it across US if I can't find the Open Forum  ;)

So here is what I am planning:

1) Completely ready to ride and meet all our SOHC-4 friends in NC or wherever Danny decides is best
     a) I am ready to be the human Godzilla and pick up others along the way (and can't wait to ride tethered to someones windshield  :-*)
2) I think I will ship my bike to East Coast (need a landing place though-I am so tired of riding through certain states just to get to a starting point I could scream and I refuse to do Kansas again LOL) and meet up for the 2nd Reunion (especially if there is moonshine again  :o) and then ride Dash home west
3) I like to ride in August/September/or latest into first week October as even though weather is unpredictable it seems I make it through (or at least around) most states without too much weather

Thoughts?

Moonshine, OF COURSE there will be. Tons of legal places in area now and you can even ‘find” the illegal if you know how to ask.

Mooshie,

Would you consider riding to Tucson, AZ and open trailering the bike to TN/AZ?
I 40 is nasty between Phoenix and “Albuturkey” It is likely it is similarly awful between Phoenix over towards LA. But you would likely come I10 or backroads/secondary roads across and down to or to Phoenix depending upon the roads chosen to get to Tucson. Depending upon the roads or path to pick up other riders along the way... if we are going to play like a caravan or pack of boilers and a car trailering me or you...

I bought a two place ride on trailer for getting my bike to places so I could then camp or explore from their as a 5 day ride across the country could be quite unpleasant especially if a weather front interrupts our schedule.

I intend to go to NE TN afterwards; as I grew up near Bristol TN/VA and my siblings, Mom, and cousins and Mom’s sister are still in the area. So, depending upon how long you intend to stick around, then I could give you a ride back or let you fend for yourself.
I will likely be a week in TN. Return trip will be interstates and 3 days of a bit more than 600 to do the 1900 miles roughly between NE TN & NW Tucson. You I could visit Nils if you haven’t yet....he and his shop aren’t too far away from me.
Helping a bit on gas would be appreciated, we could work out the details if you are open to the trailering and riding along...

I may buy a truck From a friend this yr before fall to make the trailering experience a bit more pleasant, F250 gas w ~15 mpg ...less attractive than the ~26-28mpg I expect in my car trailering driving conservatively and always on Green mode. If we take the car...then: Once we unload it, then we can do the more entertaining rides in it...I love that little car...yep, small car but comfortable for small to average height and build. Excellent sound system too, glass sunroof for enjoying sky when at speed or open at lower speeds like on curvy roads and country roads when not concerned so much with mpg.

Hi David
I would absolutely consider riding CA to AZ then trailering to TN or thereabouts.  Then I would ride Dash all the way back home  8)
No problem on pitching in for gas and other sundry expenses.
Oh boy I guess a SOHC 4 2nd reunion is really happening!

We'll see how the summer bike work sessions pan out for me once I'm back in CO. I "may" trailer a bike to GA and leave it there. More trailer space if so but a puny 4 banger Subaru to pull with. It did OK with one bike, a bunch of stuff in the back and one person.

Absolutely.  I am going to sit down and look at it with seriousness this weekend and maybe we can figure out a time (month/days) so that people can look and see if that works in their schedules.

At this point I haven't scheduled any vacation time for the summer.

I like the idea of mid September because kids are back in school and summer vacation trips generally done, so traffic in the mountains should be lighter and getting space in the camp ground easier and maybe cheaper.

Day time temps are also lower.

Sounds like a good time.  Each of my long trips (4,000+ miles) have been from end August into Mid-September.  I have always been able to dodge bad weather by being flexible in route of course.

https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/local/2020/01/27/great-smoky-mountains-national-park-attendance-2019/4591116002/

Busy and probably busier next year if gas prices don't jum up much higher than this past year.

CAUTION:
^^^^^^^^^^^^
If you come to the area of either the Smokies Or The Blue Ridge Parkway or nearby areas. Please do not be traveling at high speeds ESPECIALLY @ night the animal density and deer density is EXTREMELY high despite significant hunting.  Also, with curvy roads you can round a curve and someone may pull out in front of you and misjudge your distance and speed or simply not care. NC has a serious issue with drivers not having insurance or insufficient insurance...so, be mindful of this as well in case you have a fender bender in a vehicle or heaven forbid an issue on the bike.
On parkway the speed limit is Strictly enforced and in surrounding areas as well. Be extra cautious because of the traffic density around shopping centers and in  tourist areas...head always on a swivel. Usually people are good about watching for bikes but just be extra cautious.

All that said...
It is a fantastic place to visit and it should be a great time. I hope many will consider carving out some time to visit and join the group and experience the friends that will be New ad a result of attending and putting faces with IDs on the forum or just enjoying an inexpensive stay there.  Getting there might be a bit pricey...
