Alternative to Photobucket?
« on: July 14, 2019, 12:17:05 PM »
What are some other image hosting sites? Preferably free or cheap?

I bought extra storage on Photobucket a couple of years ago. Enough to last me a lifetime. They're now telling me they don't have a one time fee structure and that I must pay monthly/yearly. I am now locked out from uploading more, my images are water marked and the site is so NOT user friendly that I can barely log in at times, let alone share an image.
And you want me to pay for that?!?!

 Um...screw you, Photobucket.

What is everyone using to host and share images?

i'm using google photos. it has free unlimited storage as long as you don't choose to save images in "original" quality, i.e. uncompressed.

free unlimited is pretty good but it does have 2 drawbacks:

- to use a link to an image in a post or otherwise publish it, you must add the picture(s) to an album. then open the album, open the picture from there and copy the link from there. using the URL for an image directly without doing it via the album, will create a dead link for anyone who is not logged into google. it's something to get used to.

- the URLs of the images are very long. doesn't really matter in most cases, but they they just aren't very handy.

My photos back up to Google automatically.  I'll have to play around and see if I can figure out how to do it that way.

Hmmm...so that just shares a link, and doesn't add the pic to a post?

 That's the GSX750-F swap I've been working on. It's in a 1980 GS550 frame.

Are there any services that actually show the pic and not a link?

I use Google photos to share imbedded photos but my results have been mixed. Sometimes they display imbedded, sometimes they don't display, and then when revisiting the post later they will then be displayed. I have not been able to determine what causes the behavior and will often attach the same photo just in case the imbedded photo fails to display:

No, I'm doing this on a PC. I do see that when I was clicking on "photos" that it is an app, but when I go directly to Google Photos, it only adds that "app" to the attachment when I create a link.
I go to Google Photos, go to the album, select an image and then click in the "share" icon (the little < looking symbol). That opens a pop up that let's me select "create link".

Is that not how you're getting the URL?

To get the URL for imbedded photos with Google photos you will select the photo to display a larger image of the photo in a pop up window. You then right click on the photo, select "properties", and then copy the "Address (URL)" from the properties window.

i go to photos, click on albums, click the album i want and the scroll to and click the picture i want.
then right-click the picture and select "copy image address".
