Topic: Suggestions for a comfortable touring bike?

I've done 15 hours on a gl1000 four times. The aftermarket seats suck, I prefer the one Honda made. With a windjammer, lowers, engine savers a rack backrest only for trips and vetter matching bags.
 I have however, done a shipload of work to it.

Hi Don,
I owned a GL1000 for about a week. I found it difficult to maneuver around on my dirt driveway...and I had a bunch of CB550's and CB750's at the time to ride (5 & so I sold it.
 Now down to 1 running cb550, & non-running CB500 & CB750's , as I sold all the others. 
I hear you about the aftermarket seats, got a King & Queen seat from the GL1000 still if you want that experience again. Ha ha.

Like I said in my first post, I will not consider a Harley Davidson as a touring bike for reasons I don't want to get into.

Kawasaki Concours for sure !... I love mine. You can get them cheap and they last the miles ! Bullet proof motor and comfort 2-up and fast. What more could you want !

I love mine too. Two weeks ago on a 3 day trip I erased the front tire chicken strips on the North Cascades Hwy.

I just sold my 2009 Concours C14 this spring with 25k miles. It is a great bike but does not hold its value well therefore a great buy. I sold mine for $4500. I had the ECU flash tuned by a guy on the COG forum for around $325. It put 150 hp to the rear wheel and was a great ride.

I have a set of his torque cams in my 94' and it pulls really well out of the hole and roll-ons. The first generation bikes don't hold value any better and go for about 2k for a nice one. Mine is a keeper.

That is an early first gen(86'-93') with high miles. Late first gens(94'-06') bring a little more money. New wheels, new dash, better seat, adjustable pre-load caps instead of air in the forks. and better brakes.

 That's still a lot of bike for $997. Thanks for the info on the model upgrades. I had thoughts of a bus ride to Kalamazoo with my jacket and helmet.

Yep, a lot of bike for the money. If I only had $1000 and needed a good bike for a long commute and/or traveling I wouldn't think twice about buying that bike They regularly go 200k plus miles.
