Project free CB400F
« on: July 18, 2019, 08:16:33 AM »
Hi everyone. With this project, I wanted to see if I could get a CB400F on the road without spending any money. To start, I bought a CB400F from member momo late last summer or early fall. At the time I was thinking I would do a full resto on it. My problem with that is that I always end up spending too much money. I will buy parts that I need, then end up getting those same parts with a parts bike a couple months later. So, new plan. I decided I would buy a bunch of bikes to try to accumulate all of the needed parts to get one roadworthy bike and sell everything else to pay for it. Thus, ending up with a free bike. The goal with the bike is no longer a restoration, but a nice survivor looking bike. In all, I ended up buying a total of 6 bikes some of which came with extra parts including new cables, brakes, engine gasket and seal sets, bearings, etc. Basically, everything you would want to replace with new when doing a project like this, I got with the bikes, even several gallons on Honda motorcycle oil. The total spend for the 6 bikes and extra parts was $4400. Not too bad. After selling off about 1/2 of the unneeded parts, I am in the black by $364.10. So it seems this method is going to work out pretty well.  I am at the stage now where I am trying to sort through the parts that are left so I can take the nicest of each part and put the rest into the sell pile and then start assembling. I have a good base to start with as Larry had already put together a nice roller with new tires and a bunch of the other work done already. So it will mostly be a matter of deciding which engine is best and putting it in and going from there.

Cool! I was having a similar problem. I bought a basket case for $175 because I needed the crankcases for my bike. I sold a few parts to members here, then lo and behold I find an even more complete roller (only one wheel though) for FREE! However some of the parts it needs are parts I just sold...

Haha. Its the worst when you sell something then need it. Its why i saved everything i could conceivably need until i was ready to work it.

Here is the bike I started with as it sits now.

The frame has a couple modification that I dont want to bother with fixing, so ill be using a bunch of the parts from this on another bike.

This is the bike ill be getting going.

I put the exhaust on as well as a set of rebuilt carbs from another bike and it fired right up. The bad news was there was a terrible cam chain rattle. I'm not sure if its just way out of adjustment or if theres a bigger issue. Ill look into that more tomorrow. If its not a straight forward fix, then Ill be ditching that engine and going with another. This one has the lowest miles at just over 12k which is why i wanted to use it. That and the number is close to the frame number. The next option is a 15k mile engine, then a 35k mile engine that has supposedly had the top end redone. My last resort will be to rebuild one of those 3 or one of the 2 I have that already apart.

I went to mess with the cam chain tension and found that the locking bolt was missing. I grabbed a spare and went to put it in, but the hole is jacked up. It doesnt appear to even go all the way through.

Rather than mess with trying to repair that mess. I am going to just use the 15k mile 76 engine instead. Its got oil residue running down its front, so it probably needs a new head gasket. But thats not a big deal.

I finished getting the bike together this weekend and got some test miles on it. Everything seems to be in good order so far. Its a really fun bike with such a great stock riding postion.
