Auction score! Now to make them run and look nice
« on: July 12, 2019, 02:00:26 PM »
So, I go to a auction and score 2 old Hondas for super cheap.  The CB is 1976 CB750K for a whopping $5 and the Goldwing is a 1982 GL1100 Aspencade for the extreme price of $125.  Neither runs.

The Goldwing is not stuck, has good clear title and is to the best of my inspection 100% complete.  It may run by just changing the gas for fresh.  It was last registered in 2002.

The CB750K is stuck, rusty, and is not titled due to a wreck.  The previous owner bought it back from the insurance co and let it set.  It was last registered in 1983.  I see this bike as a long term project.

Welcome from NE MN,

Poor your favorite penetrating oil down the spark plug holes on that 750 and let it perk for some days.  You may have some more good luck.

Thanks for the great comments, guys!

Yes, MD, my intent was to clean the loose dirt from around the spark plugs, blow off the dust with compressed air and then put penetrating oil in each cylinder.  I was then going to hang a 36 lb concrete block off the kick starter, and see what happens.  I believe the motorcycle is stuck sitting, so it could work.  Based on what I see, I doubt there is a good seal left on this thing, so it looks like a rebuild anyways.  But it would be easier if it was unstuck first.

Don't bother with a concrete block. Put the bike in 5th gear (you will have to roll it back and forth while shifting) and try to break it loose. Stev-o has the distance record for penetrate shot from the open spark plug holes. ;D
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I finally got around to tinkering with the CB.  I pulled the plugs, 3 came out nice, 1 left the threaded portion in the head.  Still, since there was a hole to the cylinder, I sprayed penetrating oil and let it set for a few minutes.  Instead of using my concrete block idea, I just got it into 3rd gear and pushed.  I don't know if the motor was ever stuck.  It turned over right away.  The kick starter, however, is still hard stuck.  You might be able to stand on it all day it won't move at all.

Okay, off to research broken off spark plug removal, kick starters and just what to do next about getting the motor running and what NOT to do.  All suggestions welcomed!

Great find! I've gone through a couple of 1100's. If you're not familiar with them, you might check out this site... https://ngwclub.com/forum/index.php lots of good tips and info. Just an FYI, sitting for a long period of time is particularly hard on the water pump... Good luck!

If you broke off a spark plug DON'T  rotate it until you know what is inside, it could make things way worse. Rent, buy, borrow,  or steal a bore scope and take a look inside. If it's all clear then you got very lucky, if not then the head may have to come off.

With the kicker, go in through the clutch first, you may find it frees up once the clutch is out and back in
Mine did that, no idea why it was stuck but pulling the clutch out did the trick
Unfortunately two weeks after putting it together again , not riding it  , it had locked up again
Pulled the clutch out again, kicker freed up again, a week later, locked up again........
Pulled the motor apart, no reason why it was locking up
Don't  let this discourage you but give the clutch thing a try, maybe you'll have better luck

Oh, man, this reminds me...in 1971 I was helping someone un-stick a frozen Harley Sportster (the old 888cc twin) that had been sitting 2 years. We pulled the plugs and split a spray can of Liquid Wrench between the 2 cylinders and topped them off with 10w oil. Every day we checked the "depth" with a chopstick as the dipstick, until it was only about 1" deep (or so we thought) in the cylinders, as both were at the halfway point. The owner came in on a Saturday when we were about to try to 'break it free', and I had the biggest guy in the shop try the honors (210 lbs), as I was 128 lbs then. He climbed up on the cranker, jumped in the air and dropped on the arm and it broke free! - And, it spit out 2 long streams of black oil, one which went dead-center into the owner's left eye, standing almost 10 feet away...I can still 'see' it drooling down his face....! :D
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.
