anyone have a 71/72 candy gold 750?
« on: July 29, 2019, 05:38:40 AM »
I'm a bike painter who specializes in restoration work.  I've just finished writing an article that will be featured in the VJMC magazine in the next few months, and if anyone here is at Barber in October, you will find me there, as I have a 15' x 60' booth set up.

I am creating my own color match for the candy gold 750, because I haven't seen anyone that has done it yet.  I have a sample sprayed, but I need someone with a reasonably clean candy gold 750 that I can send this sample to, so that I can get some first hand feedback regarding how close the color match I've come up with is/isn't.

The only other criteria is that you're located in the USA, due to shipping logistics.  I don't always get on the forums much, so if you can help me, feel free to call or text me at 704-607-9153.  I'm in SC, FWIW...

Welcome and nice talking to you on the phone. Happy to help and sure there are a few more 'Goldie' owners out here willing to also. This ones all original and not faded.  Eric in Kalamazoo

Just got back in from Alaska, left you a VM.  When I sent the paint sample out, I didn't have any business cards to put in the envelope.  Did you get the sample yet?  Feel free to call me at 704-607-9153

I haven't seen it in person yet, but I thought House of Color Aztec Sonoma S2-12 Zenith Gold looked close, but on second review it looks a little light compared to some pictures I have of my original paint.

Watching with interest, I want to paint my last K0 Candy gold or a close facsimile.

Candy gold is a colour that differs a lot. You can see lighter and darker versiones.
The only real important thing is to paint all parts at the same time to make sure the colour is matching on the bike.

Candy has always been tricky to paint, it depends on the gun and the painter as well - not only paint.
Last month I had an original painted tank that was painted 4 times before leaving the factory.
Even painters in the 70's at Honda had lots of difficulties getting paint right.

I'd love to find a modern paint that's close to original. I'm seeing a red on new Hundai (sp) cars that could pass for candy ruby red. I'd bet it's a basecoat/clearcoat system.
I used 2013 Honda car tiger eye pearl (brown) on my k1 with K2 pearl white, gold and black stripes and it was stunning. My painter loved putting it on too.

I understand what you wat to do but why try to find something almost original when you can paint it like it originaly was?
Maybe not everyone would notice but you would know, wouldn't you?
It is like buying a Honda cb 750 k6 and swap lots of parts for a k0. Pretending it to be a k0. Would that be satisfying?
On the other hand; it is your bike. You are free to paint it as you please.

Just wondering.

My thought is, not everyone can paint candy. Even Yamiya is selling seconds due to the paint not matching from item to item. The bottom of a part is often darker than the top. A modern paint system that isn't a candy is easier to apply and produces a repeatable result. My Honda Accord Tiger Eye Pearl K1 with K2 stripes drew attention everywhere I took it, until I sold it to a Honda parts supplier. I plan to paint another one just like it.
I'd prefer a consistent color that's a slight shade off than individual parts that are inconsistent.  Honda didn't even get them perfect when new, good but not perfect. That's my opinion, feel free to disagree.
