First engine tear-down---the surprises within!
« on: January 31, 2007, 03:32:43 PM »

Just tore into my first motorcycle engine, a '78 cb550, and what fun I am having! Been a terribly good learning experience thus far (terribly in the nicest sense!)

Thought you all might get a kick out of the surprises that were in store for me... :o

Okay, you have a wet #2 cylinder.  Do you know why?

I don't know why...it does have quite a strong gas smell

Both #2 and #3 are stuck, while the others are not.

I've got those two soaking with liquid wrench now

Why is #2 wet?

Thanks!

You mean #2&3 pistons won't move?  I guess you have the engine out of the frame, so you can't use the rear wheel to rock the crankshaft back & forth.  :(

If the wet stuff is gas, it should evaporate and become dry fairly soon.  If it is oil it will stay wet a long time.   What do the cylinder walls look like? Is the head chamber wet, too?  Do you have a blow torch?

There is probably a historical reason why the cylinder is wet.  Got any history?

Cheers,

Yeah, 2 and 3 are pretty seized up.

The cylinder walls look pretty clean, from what I can currently see on 1 and 4, and what is visible on 2 and 3

Unfortunately, I don't have much of a history. I got the engine free from a buddy who was tearing down a bike that had been sitting in a garage for some time, and am using it as something to practice on and learn from.
