Rear shock clevis - NO threads
« on: August 06, 2019, 09:27:04 AM »
Hi,

I am using some old marzocchi shocks that I found. Installed them on my 350. They have no threads on the clevis end of the shock. I knew this so I bought some nylocks. However those nuts are way too thick and don't clear the nuts on the sprocket. Besides, there is not enough thread showing on the bolt to even get to the nylon.

Nils at Ikon shocks told me you only need 15 ft/lbs. of torque on the clevis. I am just wondering what I should use? I could use jamb nuts (thinner) but they don't lock? What should I do?? Thanks!

Get a longer bolt and flip it to where the long end with the nut is on the non-sprocket side?
I kinda had to do this when I stripped out my shock bolt.

I considered that. I think the head of the bolt will clear the sprocket nuts. I'm using nylocks (which are thicker) on the sprocket because the nut retainer clip broke and is almost impossible to replace.

However if I do that I have to remove the wheel to install the bolt :( haha

Do a Helicoil repair to restore the threads on the inboard side.

I’d either use a jamb nut with loctite or drill it and install a nutsert. That shouldn’t be too long. If it is, you could grind it down a bit. OR, weld the hole up and drill and tap.

Could also drill a hole in the bolt, and put a washer and cotter pin on the end...

I just purchased a 40mm bolt (original is 32mm). So I guess I am going to flip the bolt. I tested against a nylock in the store and the head of the bolt is much smaller than the nut, so I should hopefully clear it fine.

sorry for the confusion, the shocks never had threads. they aren't damaged.

You could thin the original bolt under the head on a lathe, gives more threads.
Or if you run bolt head on inside like you did you can also grind bolt head or turn on lathe if it's too thick.

luckily it fits as its shown above. And the new stainless hardware is even better looking than the old pitted chrome bolt.
