How in the hell did you cut it without blowing up?

I just wonder if cutting one with the valve removed would be an issue. I wouldn't want to be like the bomb tester guy in cartoons with a hammer!

Mix up some CO2 gas and fill the cylinder with that before cutting. The CO2 is heavy and will sink displacing the propane.

this bottle sat for near a month with no valve and upside down, the lpg is heavier than air and would be long gone, ive cut em before, just pull the valve and fill with water itll displace any gas, even if a little remained with the valve missing and a slot cut it might do half a fart if that but it aint gonna explode!im sure throwing a full one on a big ole fire would be spectacular?first burn today blistered all the paint off,ill heat black paint it tomorrow, poor bear thought we were going to cook some meat.

Tried it. They have a burst disk overpressure relief in the valve unit so I got a wicked flame shooting out - for quite a while - but no explosion. Maybe a bigger/hotter fire would get one to pop but one test was enough for me.

Looks great Dave, well done. Many years ago when I was still in the regular army I blew up a full 9Kg gas bottle with a slab of plastic explosive, right on dusk. It was a spectacular event! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, it was better than just that Dave, I was blowing up an unexploded 84mm Carl Gustav High Explosive Anti Tank round and some 40mm grenades, and the gas bottle was one an old guy dropped off at the servo I worked at part time, that was past it's use by date, so the explosion and ensuing light show was magnificent.

The good thing with HE is you don't have a little hole like a .303 going thru the cylinder, but rather, the cylinder pretty much disintegrates and you just have a huge plume of gas expanding at 27 times it's volume, so the flame front is very pretty. ;D

I welded an outlet pipe on a large train car size map gas tank. It was open for weeks and I had finished the root weld, in the morning I noticed an 1/8" gap that I had missed, I cranked up the amps and decided to burn it in and then grind it smooth. When the arc got to the gap there was a large WHANG sound. Apparently a bit of gas settled in the low spot and the sound was the check valve blowing open and slamming closed. When I looked back, I was in the road and there was a trail of welding gear behind me. I felt rather silly because running would not have helped, that was almost my moon shot.
Later, my boss was bidding a revision to the piping and I told him remember, when I strike the first arc he would be standing right beside me. He designed it to be a bolt on job with several flange unions.
