Just joined today, picking up a '73 cb750 in 9 days
« on: July 25, 2019, 03:59:25 PM »
Hello

My name is Jesse.  I currently have a 2014 Honda CB500x that I daily commute on and take on longer trips when possible.  Some of the cooler places I've taken it to is all over Big Bear, the Sierra's, Death Valley, Baja, Pahrump NV and Zion in Utah.  I also have a Suzuki DRZ 400 that I love to take off road anywhere in Southern California.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago my wife's stepmom called her and said her brother had some motorcycles he was going to sell.  I asked her what he had and one of them was a 1973 Honda cb750.  So I called him up and he told me about how he bought it back in 1975 from the original owner when he got back from the service.  He told me how much he wanted for it and it seemed really reasonable so I said I would take it.

So in  1 1/2 weeks I'm going to fly up to Idaho and spend the next 2-3 days riding it back to Southern California.  Wish me luck.

I'll post up pictures once I have it.

Cheers
Jesse

Just a quick note for you...not knowing how familiar you are with the CB750 - if the motor is cold and you check the oil it will most likely not touch the stick. Only check the oil with the motor warm. On these bikes when it sits for a while oil will leak past a stop valve and run into the crankcase leading you to think you have to add oil. If you do it will overfill the oil capacity and you will blow it out over the back tire causing a bad situation. Maybe you are planning to change the oil and filter before you head out to CA...if so that should take care of the issue. Good luck on the ride and be safe!

Thanks everyone!

I forgot to mention I had it taken to a local shop and had them put on new tires, change the oil, give it a general checkup and they say it's good to go.  I hope so, it's hot in Nevada this time of year.   ;)

I made it through Nevada on Saturday.  I had a few slow downs caused by a blown fuse and running out of gas but I was able to get into Vegas by 11pm.  Sunday went much smoother.  I was on the road by 7am and home by 1pm.  The bike doesn't run to smooth in the higher rpm range but that just gives me something to tinker with.

Thanks again
Jesse

Congrats on he bike and making the trip safely.

Bike really looks nice, wish I could get mine to look that good and most importantly , run good enough to have confidence in making a trip on it.

I remember those wide open spaces out there when I was stationed at Fort Irwin, outside of Barstow. Loved it.

Congrats on the successful ride home! A lot better than mine, haha. I traded my car for my CB550k with the intention of riding it back home (1h30m ride). First, it started pouring rain, then backfired a bit, and accelerating with the clutch in. I gave up and called a friend to pick me up 10 mins into the ride back.

I’m glad you made it safe, and I hope you found some quirks about the bike you like/want to fix. Cheers, Tuyen
