Runnin’ Rich
« on: August 05, 2019, 02:51:48 pm »
Hey y’all!

‘75 cb 550 F

Been having some running issues. Flat spots, hiccups, pops in the pods, etc...

Current approaches to the problems

-rebuilt top end due to leaky gasket (cam/ignition is all timed up-running dyna s-though problem existed owing points)

-installed dyna s

-put in some new floats and set heights correctly

What I think the issue might be:
After all that, the problem still persists. Though, I have a feeling it’s the floats. When I installed the new floats they didn’t seem as  “springy” as they should be and the problem seemed to be at the arm. They would kind of just get stuck but then I could finagle it and get it to where it needed to be.

I’m wondering if it is a good idea to drill out the float arm support holes to give it some more play?

Anyway-all four cylinders are running rich, too rich, and there is some fuel in the overflow valve at the bowl but nothing crazy. I’ve run bikes with a heavy bowl with relatively decent performance.

Whatever is happening here is crippling the bike.

Would too much fuel cause all these problems?

Thank you

 Pods.

What jets? Which clip position? How many turns on the mixture screws?

 Exhaust? What kind of muffler?

-Uni Pods (oiled)
-110 slow (I think)
-last clip on the rich end of the needle
-standard +1 1/8 turn on mixture
-custom 4 into 2 open exhaust

Ran this setup before on a ‘71 500 with good results but I reckon they aren’t the same bike.

Today I checked the wiring on the ignition.
Wires are headed to the correct coils.
Plugs are sparking.

Weirdly enough, messing with the clutch seemed to even things out but I’m assuming coincidence on that.

The only constant in my test was things got better (still bad) when I advanced the ignition timing all the way

Road around the block. It didn’t want to idle at all and hiccuped on acceleration and then I  got a flat tire right before pulling back into the garage. Ha!

So that’s my day.   :o

Here’s a hip pic of it. Actually don’t have any pics of just the bike. Will get to that soon
