Sounds like a very dull doctor.

Everything in moderation is the key.
Do you think if you limited yourself to one or two smokes a day that would be any worse than the air you breathe in any metropolitain city?

Or the air you breathe inside your own home (which they say can be worse than big city air)?

It's when you smoke a pack, two packs a day that gets you in trouble.

Alcohol in moderation, one drink a day, maybe two can help your system in ways.

Moderation is the key.

I'm off them 18 years Mar 1, 2009. Smoked 2 packs a day, not including the drinkin nights!!! :o :o

Cold turkey was the only way for me....most times it's all about the will power however fears does help.

My mother smoked for 50 years untill she had congestive heart failure back in 2000 and the doctor told her to quit or else!!!
She quit!!!

Hang in there folks...it's not easy..trust me ;)

For those of us who were/are contrary when we smoked......look out when you quit  ;D ;D ;D

The good this is it don't last long.

Thats enough to buy a new laptop!  :D

Congrats to all that have quit and are trying!  I have smoked on and off for about 15 years now.  I even quit for 2 years by trying to save money for a new snowboard, and it worked too, until I started smoking again.  I perceive my habit to be very low intake but very high addiction.  I can go a few days with out one if I must, but usually will smoke 3-5 times a day.  Thats 2-3 packs a week.  More if I'm in the garage working on the bikes/cars etc.  The Dunhill's I smoke run me $10 a pack in Chicago.   :o  I know ridiculous, but I hate the taste of Marlboros and the like.  I could be saving enough money to make a really rippen CB, but somehow I justify them over the savings.

I told my self this year I will quit, but I am just not ready yet.  :-\

i wasn't ready yet either... until my aunt at 60 years old, went into the hospital on christmas day w/ a heart attack... she has COPD and is in piss poor health all related to smoking.
my mom beat breast cancer but i don't think she's gonna make it thru lung cancer if she ends up getting it... which i'm nearly convinced she will.  she hacks up a lung about every 15 minutes so its only a matter of time... she's not ready to quit yet either.   :(

I've made a deal with myself that when the bike gets back on the road I'll trade something that will kill me for something that might kill me. I like the long term odds better with the bike.

well... i was climbing a 14,000 foot mountain several years back and i wasn't sure i was gonna make it out alive or die of an asthma attack.
2 packs a day was killing me pretty quickly after 15 years of smoking.
i'm glad to be done w/ it... i tried many times to quit and it finally worked... i just needed the right reason.
it wasn't the fact that it was killing me... it was the way our entire family reacted to my aunt's hospitalization... i won't put my family through it.

Where did this thread come from?  Man I gotta get out more, I just passed my first year anniversary for quitting the cigs. Nice to not have a plant run my life anymore, I will say this though I used the chantix to quit and its werd stuff, made me have nightmares like when I was three years old....
Heffay I did the same thing on pikes peak, about 9,000 had a lefty cig, fell down, laughed my buttox off, had a reg cig. felt like I was gonna fall out and not come back.

Glad I quit, and I am along with ya'll.

I have heard that the FDA is going to get involved with the regulation of cigs. they have finally taken interest in how hard it is for people to quit smoking now versus 30yrs ago, so they finally are accepting the fact that cig. producers are putting things in there.

I'm 1 week into quitting, so far so good. I am using a patch but I'm not sold on it doing anything. All I know is that I actually do feel better.

One of my buddy's here at work was on the patch, he has three slip ups in the last 6 months(or that's his story and he's sticking to it  :P ).

My problem is having dreams about smoking  ??? of all the things I could be dreaming about and I have them seeing me(in color) lifting it up and to my lips and then taking the world's largest drag. Then when I wake up I think what the f@#$, why can't it be me, a hot tub, and nakedness with me and....   Instead smokes....

I quit about three years ago, but in the last nine months I got back on. Right back to where I was too. Two packs a day.

I smoked my last yesterday.

I read this post, got that mozilla counter and got one on my phone.

Got the gum and the patches.

To try to compensate for the extra time I started running again too. I did one hour. Plugged my head phones into the laptop, but it infront of the tread mill and hauled ass, or at least hauled ass for a smoker, for an hour. I feel better today and that gum really does help to curb the cravings....

I just posted this elsewhere and figured it is better suited here.

The recipe for successfully quitting smoking (I've been there):
1. Don't buy any cigarettes.
2. Don't bum any either.

If you can do those two things, you'll quit, guaranteed.
And the nice thing about it, is that you only have to be your strongest when you're at a place that sells tobacco, and when you're around other smokers.

Another thing that may help...
Next craving for a smoke, grab a toothpick instead and chew the hell out of it.
Repeat as necessary.

Good luck.  I really mean that.  It's nice to be able to smell the world again.

Being around other smokers is the tuffest, most of the people I work around smoke, and the kicker....My wife and I were suppost to quit together, we did for about a month and she's back to being a chimney. It doesn't bother me until I am the one still buying them and I tol dhere that if she doesn't quit soon she will have to buy them herself so I can afford parts for my bike.

I was also trading quiting smokes for a new lefty guitar so I could get back into what I wanted to do and never had the chance. Blues man I will be someday, remember this last line.

I don't think I could handle going into a store and buying smokes for someone else, that would be brutal.  It's been 9 days now off the butts and it's driving me nuts at certain times but I have to do it, being around someone smoking is the worst. I had a CT scan (for some other issue) and they found a 6mm spot on my lung, that scared the cr#p out of me. I'd also like to thank the US and CT government for raising the taxes so a pack is now $8.40 (I think) now.

I smoked for about 15 years and quit a little over a year ago, just before my son was born.  That reason alone made it really easy.  I still have one or two a month when I'm hanging out with my friend that still smokes, but somehow it doesn't make me want to start up again.

Gordon I don't see how you guys do it, I have a buddy here that's in his late 40's and he only smokes one or two a day if that. Its usually at home too when he has a drink, that is taking self control to a new level and I give props to you and him sir.
If I could manage that I would not have quit, and I could really go for a macanudo portafino cigar right now but I know it would be all over and with my breakfast tomorrow at the QT gas station would be followed by a pack of winstons...
I have heard that it is now a statistic that a pack and a half a day and 15 yrs will get you cancer, I have smoked for 11 yrs now and it scared me.

Well I hope that "pack and a half a day, and 15 years will get you cancer" is'nt true. Cuz I smoked for 16 years give or take. I just up and decided to quit one day at 9am on a Monday while at work. It's now been a month and I already feel much better, but I know how screwed up my lungs really are.

If I tried smoking while drinking I'd start right up again. That much I know.

If you are having one or two a month, then you really haven't quit now, have ya?  You just slowed down.

I quit smoking hundreds of times with different lengths of abstinence periods before that last one in 1975.

Next you'll be telling us that you didn't inhale.

Good point.  In truth, I haven't actually quit, but at the same time I wouldn't call somebody who has one or two cigarettes per month a "smoker".  So I guess I'm somewhere in the middle ground, but that works great for me.

Are you sure that cigarette in '75 was actually your last one, or are you just in the midst of your longest period of abstinence, to date?   ;D

One major difference between myself and all the other smokers I ever knew is that I never once "tried" to quit.
