Prepping for a Concourse d’Elegance. Hints? Advice?
« on: August 16, 2019, 06:29:03 AM »
Seriously...... as previously mentioned, a friend of mine sent in an application to The Cobble Beach Concourse, for my 1970 K0 (he never told me). I’ve been accepted to their small motorcycles class. There will probably be 200+ vintage autos and a dozen bikes, in a Japanese only class. It’s in a month.

Yesterday I looked the bike over and removed a few plastic zip ties, changed out the sealed battery for a more correct wet one and removed some nylock nuts....... I did polish the front fork legs, but other than that, the machine is pretty much “as built”. I’m not riding it, since I finished the restoration, so it is spotless. With the exception of two Yamiya switches, every part on the bike is original (refinished) or NOS Honda.

Anyone have experience with the judging at these events?? What else should I be doing?? Thanks.

I know it sounds crazy but the guy that knows Pebble is Jay Leno, he takes keen interest in DIY restorers, it may be worth reaching out to him. Perhaps is Garage site has a section for contact.

Based on what I have read about the process it is all about originality in appearance. Do the nuts on the triple tree and brake hose splitter have the correct yellow paint marks? Is the style of the grips correct? Are the spokes the correct zinc coated. Stuff like that.

With those judges over restoring/polishing and stuff like that probably is a deduction if they have a keen enough eye.  Make sure your bolt heads have an '8' on them for a K0 !

Spokes are good, all “8” bolts. Not sure i’d put the yellow paint on a bike that was built yesterday? All good advice. Thanks!

I entered a couple AMCA shows with my K2. They were pretty thorough, although not what you can  expect! The K2 has the signal beep cancel button, one year only gauges, and the idiot lights are different on early K2’s. Flash, oil, turn, beam. They knew all that plus the K2 has a decal strip on the tank, not painted on.I got a 95 out of a possible 100. Not too bad. Good luck!

I participated in the " Riding into history" in florida two years ago..Lots of great bikes. Do you have a nice sign to place in front of your bike with the basic info on it , such as year, and other pertinent info? I use a picture frame ,as some others do with styrofoam board hand printed with whatever info i feel is needed. Makes a little nicer presentation.
Also, my experience has been that not all judges know all things so if you have technical data/ brochures etc. , bring them in case you might have to prove a point, if asked. I've had a few judges who actually didn't know that sunrise metal flake orange was a stock honda color for a 1975 550F..
I've also done amca.
     Enjoy yourself.

I posted a thread like yours, when I first showed my CB, and also got lots of good advice:

I just took a good look at your bike (nice)...and , it may be too late,.....but they might not like the fact that your tires are not an original tire. .or a tread pattern that at least resembles the original ... they may not care.....the front tire was a ribbed pattern.....

You may be right! I’ll look and see what I have. The vintage style Dunlop’s are pretty close.

I don't know 750's in detail. I know bridgestones were standard on my 75 550F...( tire sticker and manual)...but dealers put dunlop's on them also, supposedly.
if the 750 used my 550's front tire size of 3.25x19....here's this....not cheap...

My K70’s are new (they were not cheap) and the correct size. Probably just go with them.....

Very nice bike.
Most of the 70’s I have seen have the black around the alternator cover “HONDA”
Are your exhaust shields chrome or dulled chrome....I can’t tell.

The grips don’t look original. They will notice the small details. They got me the first time!

Seat looks kind of puffy....aftermarket?
Front fender may need to be double cut....depending on your vin.

Swoop..... good points, single cut is original to the bike. Seat was recovered by “Bob the Seat”, in England, and I agree, it’s a bit fat....... I did use the original pan.

Your good to go on the hand grips. Think the heavily grooved/finned  'waffle' grips started in 1972.
