Turn signal oddities
« on: September 12, 2019, 10:50:18 AM »
Hello,

On my 77' cb550k the turn signals light up and do not flash when you flip the switch either direction. But if you partially hold the switch over they flash like normal. Only thing I can think of  is that the switch was dirty inside or something, but I opened it up and looks fine. The headlight switch is also finicky and sometime have to wiggle it a little bit for the low beam to stay on (high beam works fine). Maybe it's simply the relay is bad and only works with partial power from the switch just barley touching( doesn't seem valid lol).

also should note that it was working fine before I put the headlight back in and connected the the gauge and pilot panel, but taking the headlight out didn't fix it, so might just be a coincidence.

If you have any ideas let me know

You could try a different flasher unit, but sounds like the switch to me.

Did you just look at the switch and not clean and lube it?

My 76f will do that with a low battery.

An old problem was the left turn signal blinked faster than the right.
Changing bulbs to the same brand normalalized blinking rate.

Some weird stuff happens! I have a flasher that does not work in my K0, but performs well in my JEEP! go figure.

Another puzzler. The flasher power to the switch is just a wire from the flasher output, flasher input is a black "ignition on" wire. No load=no flashing. So it should measure battery voltage at the switch with signals off - a meter pulls close to zero load amps.
Maybe the switch? Do the lights look brighter when you go partway and they do flash?
Do you have marker lamps? Do they go off on that side as expected when you activate signals

This happened to my 73 CB500F. Dont drive yourself crazy looking for grounds or fuses or shorts. I guarantee you its the switch. DO NO by a used switch. I wasted $32 on a ebay used switch and had the same problem. 4into1.com sells the signal switch with a carve out so you DO NOT have to run the wires through the handlebars (on my 73 thats how the wires were run).

Just get a new switch and install it.

So, I did clean the switch when it was apart. When I flip the switch all the way the signals do turn on they just don't flash. I am definitely going to try a new flasher relay before I look into a new switch.

If they are just turning on but not flashing I'd also just double check your wiring in the bucket to make sure nothings backwards or came out.

I got a new switch and that didn't fix it , but I figured what the problem was. There is a brown w/ blue stripe wire coming off the switch, which I'm pretty sure goes to the signal buzzer( which is gone). If I unplug it the signals work fine. The brown w/ blue wire it was plugging it into on the main harness is connected to the black wire(hot I think) by a jumper wire (just a brown and blue coming off of the brown and blue junction). If I unplug the jumper it cuts power to the entire lighting system, but I think I will leave it as is(minus the plugging the switch wire into it) as everything seems to be working good now.

As usual Thanks for the help y'all.  ;D
