Best black touchup paint for 77 CB400 frame and components?
« on: August 13, 2019, 04:21:04 PM »
There's so much info here, I couldn't sort through my search results!

Can anyone recommend a particular brand, color and shine of rattle can paint - preferably readily available throughout the US - that would be a decent match for the frame and side stand of my '77 CB400F?  I assume the frame was painted originally, but not sure about the side stand (did Honda powder coat anything in the 70's?).

I've used some heat to straighten some bent bits and ruined the coatings in the process - I'd like to repaint them before I reinstall them.  It's not a concours restoration, close is good enough - it's the protection I'm after...

Rustoleum gloss black is a perfect match.  Appliance epoxy is a little too shiny until it gets dirty and cleaned a few times but more durable than any other spray can I have used.
If it works good, it looks good...

I have mentioned this product in several posts. It is easy to find and almost identical to stock.

Thanks!  They offer three different primers - Gray Self-Etching, Gray Sandable, and Gray Filler.  Which one, if any, do you suggest?

I generally only use self-etching when painting 100% bare metal. If you have just a few bare metal spots either of the other two options should work fine and I have also sprayed the frame paint without primering.

Well, at this point it's just spot touch-ups as part of a "see if it runs" job on what will be a fair-weather ride... nothing like a restoration. I've got a can of Rustoleum self-etching primer on hand, so maybe I'll test their compatibility and just use that if they play nice together...

Same here, it's great paint. you can even use it on exhausts with just a little care, and silver version is great for crankcases (when used with their "special metals" primer)
