Quieting Delkevic Megaphone Muffler
« on: August 19, 2019, 10:42:36 AM »
I've run Delkevic's full system with megaphone-style muffler on my 78 CB550K for a couple years now. Overall, it was a great buy.

As time has gone on, the exhaust has gotten much louder. I've responded by resealing the muffler to the collector, making sure to apply a generous amount of high-temperature RTV and allowing it to fully cure. That helped a little bit.

Has anyone had more luck quieting the exhaust down? Customer service mentions that the outer baffle is not repackable. But I wonder whether I could wrap or pack one or both baffles---inner or outer---with fiberglass.

I have Delkevic on the CB900.  If and when i want it quieter i will get a different muffler from Cone Engineering.  There is only this much you can do with the original muffler.

My Delkevic came with 2 baffles and the outer baffle was already wrapped in packing material. I removed the small inner baffle before I even installed the system, so I don't know how much quitter it would be, but as is it doesn't strike ne as loud at all.

I would pull the baffle and wrap with muffler material and see what that sounds like.

When looking for a muffler for my 77 550F I came across silencers called DB killers/baffles. I’m not sure if they are a great find or horrible idea.  Could be worth looking into.

Meanwhile I’m getting ready to order a “quiet-er” muffler from cone engineering. They have sound bite videos on their site to compare their product lines.

Good luck

Ace, would you mind sharing the part numbers or a link for the Cone products you ended up trying?

I'm particularly interested to know whether Cone might sell a silencer that I could slip onto the Delkevic collector.

https://www.coneeng.com/

The one I’m getting is listed under motorcycle components (in list on left) then down the page to mufflers, there is a link to prefab items. However they also custom build stuff.

Good luck.

Is it just me, or does our taste for loud pipes change as we age???
I've reduced the noise all my classic bikes make. And to my surprise,  my GS, and my CB run better with baffle than when I thought I had a free flow exhaust?

When I got my bike years ago it had a new original muffler. Was pretty quiet. It was stolen shortly there after. When I got it back, they had straight piped it. I rode it that way for years because of money being so tight. I can see the argument that loud pipes are safer but I never really liked them all that much. But at 55 yep maybe age does have a little something to do with it. 8)
