Airbox
« on: August 20, 2019, 07:58:06 am »
Hello,

I am missing the airbox for my 77' cb550k and was wondering if I should try to acquire an original one or go with an aftermarket option? What are good aftermarket air filters?

I would recommend trying to find an original. They aren't that hard to come by as a lot of people remove them for café and brat bikes. Just make sure that you get a box for 77 or 78 550K, the boxes for the earlier K models and any F model won't fit because the 77-78 550K uses different carbs than all the other 550's.

It is possible that an earlier airbox setup will work if you replace the box-to-carb rubber with the correct ones for your year.

This is what you will need to restore.  However, the 77 K model used a similar air horn over the filter box, as in the second pic, instead of the tray/cover shown in he first.

There aren't any aftermarket options that won't require rejetting the carbs.

All I could find for complete air boxes is a 77' F model one for $100 on ebay, but looks like it would fit if I change the boots. I will also try asking in the wanted section of the forums.

No it wont.

Why not? The only difference is the carb to plenum boots. It should work just fine.

See Sohron's "cb550 assembly manual" in the maintenance section for more information.
