Splicing connectors and damage to wiring
« on: August 20, 2019, 06:07:50 pm »
Typical of vetterized bike turning stock. Question is, how do you guys protect these cuts in insulation. I guess leaving these open calls for potential trouble down the line

Those are speed holes - makes the wire lighter ;-)

Make sure the wire strands are intact. If all looks good, wrap electrical tape around each of those slits and I’d mummy wrap the bundle up to the connector, leaving not more than an inch of the colors exposed so you can see what wire is which.

I was considering doing same but with liquid tape instead. They were so close to connectors that doesn’t allow me to wrap electrical tape.

You’ll be fine cutting little squares off of electrical tape (3M is the best stuff). It’s no biggie. Wrap it all up later.

Shrink wrap is better but that’s a slight pain as you either have to trim it off, fit a shrink tube but on and solder... or you can remove the pin/blades from the connector but that’s not too fun either. Just make sure the wires don’t cross, wrap it up and ride away.

Slit the heat shrink, wrap it around, hold with alligator clip or needle nose, when the heat hits it will tighten up.

I should look for a glue to fill the holes in insulation. Flexible type.

Maybe the glue for bathroom mats and carpets can work. That type meld the plastic together

It’s easy to remove the terminals from the block and heat shrink it. You’ll be done in 10 minutes. Do one at a time. I hate electrical tape, the adhesive turns slimy after a while.

tape does turn slimy.....the terminals are easy to remove, IF you've done it before and have a mini flat blade screw driver, or a terminal removing tool, that'd be best. The liquid tape would be just as good and quicker....

So called electrical vinyl tape is crap. Becomes sticky slimy vinyl that will soon go off.
Best electrical tape I have used is fiberglass tape from 3M. The not very gluey type made in early 90's was perfect.
Got it from my job, used around harnesses where strapped to a fastener.

I've done a lot of Vetter 750's and I simply put a coat of Seal All, a flexible glue like material over those spots and move on to the next chore.
