I know what you mean.

I find myself looking at the nuts, washers, etc for orientation wear marks. So I can put them all back where they came from.

My son thinks it's funny when he rearranges things for me.

well the springs are definitely produced with a lot more work on one side, there's gotta be a reason. if i guess it'll be wrong, i would think the smooth rounded edge side down, so outsmarting my guess i should put the sharp side down. i have 2 in both are opposite of each other. that's pretty cool you do the same thing. i'll bet you have a big bolt nut bucket filled too. it's paying off finding what anyone needs. but the new kids they don't see it like important. patch it up with whatever or buy another one. with harbor freight as their only option or comparison, that to them is what east coast tool companies were to us.

No matter what goes up against the head, it should be the smoothest side.  You don't want anything harder than the head itself having a sharp edge that can cut into the aluminum. If you run the bike hard, everything is going to be moving around, springs, valves, spacers.

on the 400s there's an inside spring washer also. thanks but it's already put together. some of the washers are nearly identical both sides. some have distinct finishing square cuts. and from what it looks like the machined area where it sets on the head is same sq area as the flat side. so that's where it went. i used to run it hard, but after a 9month down for an oil leak fix, just for the head, i think i'm gonna nurse it from stop light to stoplight from now on. i'm just happy i wasn't banned from this website, for the last 2 days i couldn't log in to this site at all. in the morning i gotta go shopping at the store, when i get home i'm gonna start putting it together, lost or not.

run the spring ends on plate glass and wet paper,also de burr the shims if you can bit more fiddly.

yeah that's the one, plus another one on the guide, for the 400f. the images don't show the detail, much like the base gasket dowels, i haven't found any pictures that show that either. i can't get in to the manuals page for reason. but some other similar size and dated bikes might. one this that's kind of weird is the bottom base gasket doesn't have an o ring on the dowel for the oil passages, just a dowel.  oh well. it's going together today.  thanks
