So I recently purchased a 1972 750 and which I am in the process of restoring.

First timer, so taking it slow and reading this forum . . . .a lot.

My question is do you remove the VIN plate before sending the frame for powder coating and then rivet it back on, or just leave it?

Also, does anyone know a good shop for powder coating in South Texas (Austin/San Anton/Houston) area they could recommend.

I’d encourage you to remove it. Carefully drill the rivets hot, use some monofilament fishing line, and slip it behind the VIN tag to release it from the neck. You can reinstall with new rivets after powder coating.

Hey Chris...are you in Austin? +1...remove the VIN plate. But, you will need special "rivets" to reattach it.

Diamond Powder in N. Austin is good....

I live between Austin and San Antonio so that's definitely doable. Thank you for the suggestion.

Or you can media blast the frame and use POR15 on it. You apply it yourself. It looks great, tough as nails, repairable later, costs less.

I have never seen a pop rivet as small as the stock VIN plate rivet. If you are going to have your frame powder coated the shop will sandblast the frame first which will destroy the VIN plate. Drill out the small brass rivets and save the plate. You can re-drill the holes after coating. I haven't put my VIN plate back on yet. I was thinking of using some very small brass picture frame tacks for the rivets if I can find the right size.

I believe they are referred to as "drive rivets" (stock). There's plenty of pop rivets available in a small enough size, but after you drill out the stock units, you'll be oversized already. So a 1/16 or 1.2mm metric will work just fine. I like stainless rivets or aluminum. The aluminum are easier to install, never rust, and work just fine. The stainless look brilliant against a repro VIN tag.

it is my understanding that Mcmaster-Carr sells the correct rivets to put the vin tag back on. I read that on this forum somewhere. Definitely take the tag off, there were many stories of woe when guys got the frame back with the tag "blasted" off.

There are reproduction plates available that will put your VIN on them. They are on Ebay all the time and they come with new rivets that have the correct look.

Unless it's a concours restoration, just use alu or ss rivets.

Industrial electric motor rewind shops usually have the original style drive rivets needed to reinstall the VIN plate since they often remove and reattach or replace motor data plates.

My powder coat guy assured me he could remove the plate. Even after multiple questions. After all, he does them all of the time for those Triumph guys in the Quad Cities. Then they blasted my data plate into dust. On a low number K0. !@#$%^&*(_+ oh, next they pounded the rivets in tight before powder coating it.
