3D Printing a License Plate Bracket
« on: August 21, 2019, 08:22:11 am »
Hey guys,
I finally got my bike titled, so I need a way of mounting the plate. I have a frame hoop (25* upsweep) welded into my frame, and wanted to have a way of mounting it there. The easiest solution would be to weld in a tab, and bend a piece of metal, but I like to complicate things.

Ive modeled this 2 piece bracket. One piece will sit in the hoop (attached with self tapping screws) and the other piece will mount to the bottom. The bottom piece has a recess for a small LED strip and has a channel through both parts to accomodate the wires.

I'm currently 3D printing the parts to test fitment.

What do you guys think?

I need to get one made first XD. I've been trying to print the large circular part for 3 days - the print keeps failing...

Making them for people would be tricky, as im not sure how consistent the frame hoops would be. If someone would want one to try though, I could give it a shot, but couldn't guarantee that itd fit unless they actually sent me the frame hoop they were going to use.

I've had some small bits printed for my bike before (gopro mount and the like). Love this kind of experimentation.

I 3D printed a mount for the starter solenoid and a little riser to lift up my speedo unit:

Print them to a known or popular radius. Then folks can bend to suit or you can also supply hoops.
 Product development...fun, rewarding..

Well, as expected, it needs some tweaking. I used the half-finished part that goes into the frame (attached with zip ties), and bolted the plate bracket portion on to check the plate angle. Unfortunately, under high compression of the rear shocks it hits the tire, so more revisions are needed.

Right now the plate is 60* below the frame hoop, which is 25* upwards. That makes my plate ~35* down from being flat. I dont what to go much more than that, but I guess I'll have to.

From the little bit of the "Frame hoop section" I had to work with, it feels like it fits well. Hopefully the print I started today completed so I can do a full fitment test.

Picked up the frame section of the mount today. Fits like a glove! Actually pops into place and holds tight without bolts (but it will eventually be bolted). Started the revised plate bracket section today, but won't be able to get it until after next week. I'll post more pics when I get that in hand.

Spring loaded pivot on the top and a roller on the bottom of the plate?
