Topic: What should I do? Big hole

ay guys check out my big hole. Do you like it? The guys at the exhaust/welding place didn't like it.

This is the welded on muffler for pipe 2 on my CL350

Try to popnail some thin metal plate on it. I mean, what else can you do? BTW, the hole looks like the typical weak spot that had its origin in a drain hole that had been clogged for too long.

I considered using a rivet gun as I'd seen that in other threads here, but this area is more of a complex shape, not sure I will be able to get any kind of seal that way. I was thinking about JB weld but I also read that it (and aluminum can) doesn't hold up

If it were mine I think I'd try the aluminum can and jb weld.  What do you have to lose?  Might get you by til you find a replacement.

I rode it with this hole for like 9 months because I had too many other projects.. Anyways now I've got another bike to ride so time to solve this.

What if I put a relief hole in the repair? Or would that defeat the purpose

Looks nasty but atleast its not as bad as mine. My pipe for number 1 muffler was barely hanging in there. Their currently getting fixed at the chrome place.

 I watched ebay like a hawk. I searched so often I noticed the new ads.

I have used JB weld "steel stik" with aluminum can as a backer to help span the hole. The steel stik is rated up to 300* F and 900 PSI.

I think it should be fine to withstand the pressure, we'll see about the heat. Maybe the heat cycles will make it dry up and fall off, we'll see. It was only $8!

Well the JB weld came off today after about a week.

If you didn't scuff up the chrome with something like 80 or 100 grit sandpaper, it won't stick for long.  It needs a bit of tooth to adhere to chrome.  I patched the underside of a 400F pipe with JB Weld and it worked well.

I did scuff it with 100, or around there (can't remember). I've purchased the "extreme high heat" JB weld and will try again.
