No power to gauge lights (ignition switch question)
« on: August 30, 2019, 11:45:32 AM »
The following relates to my 1973 Cb500 Four.

I have an electrical issue where everything is working, except I have no power to the gauge bulbs. Upon inspection, I am not getting power to the brown/white wire at the ignition switch with the key turned to the first position. In the second position, the tail light (brown wire) is powered as it should be, and nothing else.

I tried to open up the seemingly new aftermarket ignition switch to see what was going on, and reposition the copper plates, but no dice. I moved them around in a few different configurations, and Ive landed back at the start. Everything works as it should except the gauge lights.

I saw a few splices and taped areas on the main harness, so I ordered a new one to clean things up and eliminate any possible issues. I installed it, and the same issue remains.

Any ideas? Should I just order a NOS ignition switch and call it a day?

Try testing it with a multimeter instead of just stripping it out
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I did test with a multi meter, which is how i determined at no point is the ignition switch powering the brown/white wire.

Turns out I have a broken connection at the handlebar headlight switch at the brown/white wire which is causing my issue.

Thanks gents
