Topic: Struggling with cb400f throttle cables

It’s a Canadian 77 cb400f which still received lower handlebars and rear controls.

When I keep just the pull cable, it snaps right back. The moment I hook up push cable , it gets sticky.

It was fine with same cables until I pulled aftermarket grips and slid on OEM grips. New grips were binding throttle sleeve/ tube with handle, pulled right grip off a bit (1/4” from switch) it improved a bit but didn’t snap back with both cables.

I rode only with pull cable and ordered new pair of cables from 4into1. Upon arrival, compared with existing cables and new one are over 2” shorter

Any thoughts??

the 4into1 description says that they are shorter than stock, which is apparently a better fit than the originals. I have installed them on my friend's bike when we got low bars for his, and there were no problems. So I don't think it's the cables, unless yours have a defect.

I'm 99% positive your '77 has been retro-fitted with lower bars and rear-sets. I've personally checked out well over a dozen original '77 400/4s to purchase in 4 provinces. Most were decaying, and 4 I've bought or facilitated a transaction for a friend. All of them had higher bars and front-biased foot controls, along with the other small details that help identify '77s.

As for the cables, the shorter cables that 4into1 sells make for a cleaner look. They are a tight fit, but they don't bind or pull the throttle. They won't fit with the standard USA/CAN '77 CB400F handlebars, though.

I have had a 76 and 77 Canadian 400F. Both had identical "rearset" foot controls and passenger pegs on the swingarm. The bars, no idea what was original but they both had low bars, and what looked like original cables fit perfectly. I really doubt that the foot controls on the 77 had been changed. It came to me missing a lot of cosmetic things, I think it was a parts bike for the PO.

are you adjusting your cables so that the throttle tube has the correct amount of free play as per the manual?  adjust them too tight and the cables are fighting against each other
