I've got a screw loose!

Time to disconnect the tach cable until winter arrives and I can take that guy apart.

I had a similar problem with my speedo - a bouncing needle.

I took it apart and found this gear was rotating somewhat on the spindle. I replaced it with a part from another old speedo which fixed the problem for a while, but it soon came back.

I spoke to a guy who repairs speedos - Peter Bond @ guagerepairs.com – and he reckons the problem is with either the gap between the rotating magnet and the speed cup and/or the hairspring.

I will be sending him the speedo shortly to see what he can do with it; meanwhile I bought an old one so I can carry on my trip.

Following on from above, I replaced my defunctspeedo an eBay speedo with 32,000 miles registered.

This worked well fro a while, but is now behaving like the old one, with the needle bouncing all over the place.

I thought it unlikely the same problem would be present in both speedos, so what, outside the instrument itself could be the cause.

Could it be something in the speedo drive, or a faulty inner cable?

Dampner pot fluid may be all but gone and need replaced. It is a small reservoir that holds silicone shock oil.

The gauge has to be removed from the housing and there is a small can in the needle assembly you drill a small hole in the cap. Squirt in some 35000 weight silicon shock dampner fluid  (RC cars) with a hypodermic needle to refill the container. Then reseal the hole you made with a drop of glue or small bit of epoxy putty.

There is a thread about a gauge rebuild that shows this.  I do not have the link to the thread, sorry.

The repop gauges also have a different mechanism and smaller pot that you can't get fluid into.

Not an on the road fix, then.

Strange that two gauges are the same; is this a common thing?

I’ve had it out a couple of times and it looks OK.

Now that I’m going home for a while, I’ll maybe take the speedo with me and send it off to the guy I spoke to before.

It’s an ill wind ....  ;D

First step is lube the inner cable to see if your cable is worn or lacking lube. Aftermarket cables need lubed before use.  Honda OEM cables are superior and I believe they do not require lubing before use. Cost for Honda cable is not much more than a good aftermarket cable.
