Forgive me, I bought a 1980 CB750F

I mean come on, it’s been very well-kept (owned by a sensible adult and properly stored) for a whopping $750 so cut me some slack already.  ;D

But here is the thing, uou guys were so incredibly helpful on my questions when I was looking at a SOHC that you’ve ruined me. I’m sure I’ll see the light and come back to an earlier CB750  but until then I was hoping if someone could give me some tips on a good parts supplier for normal service items like brake lines, carb rebuild kit and that sort of stuff.  I’ve been to a couple sites that I found through Internet searches and a lot of the parts are listed no longer available.

Have you been happy with parts quality? eBay makes be skittish, maybe unfairly so.

I bought there insulators and air cleaner boots, Delkevic exhaust and master cylinder kit.    You can also find NOS on ebay, Honda made parts, never used.

Don't forget South Sound Honda of Olympia WA as they have probably the lowest dealer prices out there and are very reasonable on shipping charges. If it is still order able from Honda you should check their prices on their online parts ordering tool.

Also check with local Honda.  I wanted second key for the 900 and it took them two days from order to pickup.  Two key copies for $11, quite happy.

It looks like I can pull the side covers and seat off to gain access to remove the air box and carbs pretty easily, yes?

I have only worked on one dohc and it was a long time ago, but, I remember getting the carbs in and out as the hardest job I ever did and the airbox is so deep in the center of the bike, it is basically the last thing that can come out...pretty sure that is a main factor in why I have never purchased a non-runner dohc.
If it works good, it looks good...

Carolina and back without so much as a hiccup..70-90mph the whole way.  If you run it hard, keep an eye on the oil level.

  If the starter clutch is acting up and not catching all the time get in there and tighten up some screws on that assembly and add some loctite. Known problem on the 750 and 900F. I fixed my 900f with very little effort and saw firsthand the dilemma.

Thanks for the eagle eyes on this – I did not spot that it had been modified. Do you think the engine was simply painted or does it look like it’s been swapped out for something else? I would imagine that front fender would be fairly easy to swap out if I wanted to, yes?

I would keep the front fender.  Better then the original.  I would bet sometime in it's life the engine was painted, although following years came from the factory black.  You would know for sure by looking at the engine number on the title or registration.  Painting the engine black on mine was one of the first things I did to it.  More to make it resemble the 900F.  Really good bikes if they've been maintained.

Good morning and thanks for the note on the fender and engine.

This bike has sat for about seven years but was well maintained prior to that. She was stored dry of fuel (fuel drained prior to putting her in storage) for whatever that i worth.With that in mind;

- do you think it needs a valve adjustment due to sitting or should that be OK (leaning towards OK)
- brake lines and master cylinders likely OK still if the lines look fresh, or should I replace as a matter of waking her up
- ditto on fuel lines, thinking about replacing

Will pull and service the carbs, oil changes and new brake fluid, and of course need to check the date codes on the tires etc

Rubber brake lines should be replaced every 6 years or 2-3 brake flushes as they degrade with time.  Braided Stainless Teflon lines are longer lasting and give superior feel and performance.

I've used Apex and Spiegler lines. My most recent purchase was from Venhill US, which is based in Texas. Their system is nice because the ends screw on, so you can clock them exactly the way you need. The price was very reasonable and I had them in a few days. They have a web store on Ebay.

Good to hear that APEX is well regarded, someone local referred me to them and I was about to place an order on Monday.  I’ve been dealing with Raymond there who has been super responsive and helpful.

What do you guys think about clear stainless (Silver)  Lines versus black covers over the stainless lines ?

Clear or black,it is really a personal preference thing on what you want them to look like. Either would look fine. Some would not want the eye drawn to them on the black bike.  I do not mind it.

I thank Randakk's makes a carb rebuild kit for the DOHC. He has good products I have used them on GL 1000, GL1100, GL1200, GL1500 carbs with good results.
