Replace points or whole plate assembly?
« on: September 10, 2019, 06:22:59 am »
I've researched this but most of the information is many years old. I need to replace my points but it seems the way to go is genuine oem Honda points? I can't find any except with the whole plate assembly. My question is-should I bite the bullet and replace the whole assembly? I see "4 into 1" sells separate points and condensers-any good? (or bad?) Is there a source for genuine Honda points? Thanks

If your plate has the letters TEC at upper left you have a good plate. Points might be good too in that case.
The points with a propeller like logo (daichii) are often worse to adjust and have not as good overall quality.
If you can see arches where points connectors are when bike is running, replace condensors.

30200-300-154 whole plate assembly from Honda TEC, accept no substitutes!
Go to South Sound Honda for best prices, look under their OEM Part Finder section.

Hondaman-I found that site and put in the part #. It came up "Hitachi" and listed them for '77-'78 CB750. Are those the OEM ones that would be correct for my '76Cb750F? Thanks for the advice.

After some more research I see "Partzilla" Has 30200-300-154 set for $92.17 with free ship. Listed as "TOYO"     Would that be a OEM set? Thanks

Frenzy, if you consult the Honda Parts Lists for the 750, you will learn that the factory fitted both: Hitachi and TEC and Toyo is TEC. So all are OEM.

Thanks for all the info. My plate that is in the bike now is a Tec. So I'm good there. I just ordered a set of OEM points to replace the current ones. One more question-do I also need to replace condensers? Any brand OK? Thanks again

If you add Hondaman's ignition module condensers are not needed.
I noticed some single misfires after 8000 rpm without.

Are you looking to keep everything original? I swapped out the points plate for an electronic ignition and I have never been happier. Just one less thing to worry about while out and about.
It's a bit more pricey but for the convenience and reliability you can't go wrong with an electronic ignition/

I'm up for anything that will help performance and durability without destroying the basic look of the bike (which is perfect...(-;) . I'm ordering the ignition kit from Hondaman.

The condensors that I can find (separate from the TEC plate assembly have not been TEC brand. I suspect them to be Daiichi. I just had another one fail last week, stopped the spark on the 2-3 side like someone unplugged it after 5 minutes of run time. Worked cold, quit hot, repeatedly. Since I have my Ignition aboard, I just unplugged them form the points for now, will have to get some TEC condensors somewhere.

The Honda parts fiche shows both Hitachi and TEC now, but they have been sending me just the TEC regardless of which I've ordered lately. If I could get Hitachi, they would be my favorites, but the TEC work great, too.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I remember a forum thread where alternative capacitors were up
I ordered some but forgot where I put them.
 0.22μf 600V something...

EDIT:
Found 0.22μf 630V Polyester film capacitors on eBay UK.
Ordered some just for sure.

I'll make a "junction box" separate where points wires blue and yellow connect to main harness. On my bikes via Hondaman module.
Both capacitors one leg connected together with 2 green wires to ground, 1 to point plate ( and HM module)
The other cap legs get 2 yellow and 2 blue wires on each.
Put the assembly in a small taped box and fill with epoxy. Remove the small box when hardened. Only the 6 wires sticking out.  1 green only if no HM module

HM module might get this built in and avoid condensers completely?

The capacitors connect point to ground via their capacitance.

Update.
Replacing condensors with mentioned capacitors did not last long.
I had covered 2 with soldered wires in epoxy and mounted on points plate

Misfires after around 1000km.

Now no at all which work with Hondaman ign module.

I'll see if I'll test really old NOS condensors.
