VERY COOL.

You DID want an Indian, as I recall?

Unfortunately, the 'buy it now' price is more than my car is worth, with my bikes thrown in!

Oh yeah, I'd like to have one and my Dad would have a blast helping me work on it but, and that's a REAL BIG BUT, I'd have to sell everything I own, get rid of my wife and daughter just to try to get it. ::) Then what would I use for money to buy what ever else I'd need? ??? ;D ::) It would be cool to have an old Chief to plunk around on now and then. 8) But, so far, it's going to have to be in my dreams. :(

      seaweb,

Sorry to tire you out so. My poor OLD pc doesn't have much memory (bout the same as me ;D ::))
I need to clear out some space but, I'm not sure where. ??? About a year ago, I had some problems with ebay, and someone there told me how to periodically clean up some stuff that builds up, to free up some memory or something like that. Problem is I forgot what I was supposed to do. That might give me the space I need. I may just have to wait until I can upgrade to a newer (not new) pc.

So Bill- how much for the daughter?  How are her teeth?  Strong back?  Would you consider an RD60 as partial payment?  Send pix.

I know Red Fred (called that because of his hair, not his politics).  Member of the San Francisco Motorcycle Club, one of the oldest clubs in the country. Also one of a group who used to ride their Indians on a very regular basis- Red, Indian Fred, Inky, et al.  I'm actually surprised he's letting go of these parts...

You'd have to take her mother too and, take my word for it, you'd PAY me to take them both back! ;D ::) and I'd have lost a friend forever.

Pretty pricey but, what an investment, if a person could swing it. The value of these just keeps on going up as we speak. I see them now days for anywhere from about $15K to about $20K or more. :o Check this deal out. Too expensive for me!!!http://www.kiwi-indian.com/Kiwi%20Replica.htm          or this one.

Kiwi is the company making Indians again.  That bobber is tasty.  A friend has the 4 speed tranny and 80 inch engine.  Trouble is, the suspension can't really handle it.  More than 70 mph on what's essentially a hardtail is nuts.

You are surely right about the suspension there Uncle. It wasn't the best by any means. I wonder if there were any improvements in the reproduction parts that might help in that area? I do know that there have been some improvements that have been made. Did ya know that there is an OHV top end that you can get and install directly on an old flathead lower end and go with it? I'll find it again and post it.

Dave, you make it sound so easy. ;D ::) If only... ::) The closet I've gotten to having one is to collect diecast ones. I've got a red and black 48' Chief that's a little over a foot long, I've got a deep red one that's about a foot long and a turquoise Indian Four that's about a foot long (I don't remember the actual scale of these) and some misc smaller ones that I picked up. I'd come closer to being able to afford an Indian Warrior, Vertical Twin Scout, Arrow or Brave easier that a Chief, V-Twin Scout and especially an Indian Four! Meanwhile check this one out (I'm not exactly sure how but, I actually managed to post this. :o

Bill,

That baby has your name on it!
You've already got the flywheel balancing tool. right?

This one comes with a lot more parts than mine came with.
Of course mine was a "runner".
But "yours" has a good look to it-My feeling is that it would work without too much trouble.

Well thanks, only problem is, I'm not very consistant. Maybe with time and efforts, I can get better. I just gotta keep on trying. I need to learn how to reduce picture sizes too. That would help, in some cases.

Bill - all those Indians have a great deal of character, but the models similar to the '46 Chief with the deep streamlined fenders have a style thats timeless. True classic motorcycles. Functional sculpture.
Congrats with the image posting ;)

Yeah, as far as the old Chiefs go, I would prefer the skirted fenders too.  Nothing against anyone who changes them , just my preference. I'd take one any way I can get it though.

Dave, you've been a big help to get me to where I can do something in the way of image posting and I appreciate it. I still need to fine tune it though.

Keep hunting Bill.

My experience is that if you go looking for stuff you want but can't afford....eventually it pays off and you find the deal that works for you.

Bought my 40ft boat for $12,000.00 it was listed at $38,000.00
Bought a piece of waterfront listed at $2000,000 got it for $110,000...if you don't go looking you will never run across it ;D

Dream it and it can come true.

       Thanks seaweb,

I do try to keep looking. I could do like my Grandfather did when he was starting his motorcycle shop waaaayyy back there in the 40's. He and another fellow took an Indian Chief w/a sidecar (that had no body, just the frame and a wheel) and searched the countryside for bikes. They found them in barns and sheds, bought them for next to nothing, brought them back and either put them aside to fix up or parted them, putting the parts on shelves. I've kinda got the startings of that except mine are Japanese bikes, mostly Hondas. His shop was in business until he died in Dec of 1968.
A big difference between my Grandfather and me is that he was one hell of a mechanic and he only had a 6th grade education at that!. As far as that goes, my Dad's no sloutch either. At any rate, if I manage to come across any kind of a deal on an old Indian, I'll let you all know "After The Deal Is Made and The Bike Is In My Possesion", no offence, but I ain't telling nobody. I have been dreaming it for sometime, and being a "Hard Headed Dutchman", I Have To Be Persistent. You take care and I'll catch you later on,    Bill :) ;)

A good family friend was the local Indian dealer until '53. Sold the last three Chiefs for $600 to get rid of them. No one wanted an orphan. In 1960, one of the buyers called him and asked if he wanted it for free because he was drafted and had to get it out of his parent's garage. His son still has it. How opinions change.
