Rear brake drum ? 76 550
« on: September 16, 2019, 11:54:16 PM »
So I'm trying to hook up my rear brake. Im not sure why this is not stopping anymore. I never had the problem before. It's not even slowing anything down on the wheel. Wondering if someone might have a suggestion to try cause I'm just confused now on the rear brake.  Not sure as well about the screw....i can't find the screw to place back in. Would anyone know the size for that rear brake hinge thing to tighten it in?

Try tightening up on the adjustment screw on the brake rod. The one at the bottom of the pic, with the spring on it. Screw it in until the brake causes the wheel to stop or drag, then back off a turn or two.

The missing screw on the actuator arm is a 6x20.

Did you just install the rear sets?

you're missing the bolt ,#18 in the diagram, for the brake arm. Every time you apply the brake that arm is slipping on its splines and you wearing the splines down.

That arm is a pretty tight fit. I doubt it's moving on the splines.
It looks to me that he has the adjustment all the way out.

The rearsets have been on it since 2012. The brake foot arm has always been a bit lower idk.  It just worked only at that spot. I'm gonna hit up hardware store today to get the bolt and then mess with that brake rod you were telling me.
Thanks!!!!

From looking at the photos, here’s a couple of other issues. The pull rod should be very straight. Otherwise the first part of the stroke is wasted, pulling it straight. Also, the actuating arm (on the brake drum) should not be pointing straight down, at rest (no brake application). It should rest pointing back, at about 7 o’clock, not 6.

Where it is now, the connection point rotates up and away from the rod, when the brakes are on. Half the applied force is wasted, trying to pull it into alignment. Do get that bolt installed. It will work fine in. the shop, but not the first time you really need it......

Tell us what you did, what all you removed.
There's a splined arm at the front of the adjustment rod; what the stock brake pedal would attach to. If that arm isn't positioned correctly you won't get the leverage you need, either.
