Skunked voltage regulator? (Actually CDI boxes)
« on: September 22, 2019, 08:58:48 AM »
Good morning-hope everybody’s having a good weekend.  Had a couple minutes of time this morning to start poking at the 1980 CB 750 F and while getting the old battery out noticed that it looks like the insulation on the voltage regulator melted.  So that leads to a couple questions, if I may,  as working on motorcycles is still quite new to me and I’ve never wrenched on this Honda before;

1) I am assuming this is indeed the voltage regulator, yes?

2) From  The vintage cars that I’m more familiar with when I see melted insulation on something I assume it’s gotten too hot in that the component is probably compromised, does that hold true here as well? To build up a reliable bike for regular use should I just replace these?

Thanks!

Those are not a voltage regulator,  that is part of the ignition system. They are commonly called the spark units, the proper name escapes this old brain at the moment. One unit is for cylinders 1&4, the other is for 2&3.

Ah!it just came to me, they are called ignitors.

I dont know about normal, but it isn't rare. I read somewhere about people resealing them with jb weld or epoxy but iirc that lit a flame akin to an oil thread. They are the weak link in the ignition system especially for the 650 guys for some reason.

There is a home brewed system people are making, search for GM HEI conversion or some such thing. Member Turttle Sniffer II on this site has done it, but that was a 650 also. I don't think there is a difference between the 650 and 750 for this ignition. I could be wrong though.

That's it. Winner winner chicken dinner!

Where are you at in So Cal, I'm in Corona. We might be neighbors.

BTW for the price of 1 of those ( it takes 2) you can build that HEI system, check it out.

Oh, cool. I’m in Irvine so close.

Let me get this thing sorted and then let’s ride Ortega!

All I need is a bike that runs.........and life isn't allowing that to be happening real soon. Some day it will happen.😎
