Rear hydraulic brake conversion
« on: September 15, 2019, 03:56:33 PM »
So I may have bitten off more than I could chew. Basically, I bought a 1978 cb550k that I have been restomodding. During the process I opted for rear disc brakes, so I purchased a rear 1976 cb750f ss rear hub, rotor and caliper. I then ordered a custom rear sprocket with the proper tooth count to mate to the hub. Everything mounted up perfectly except one thing, my sprockets are not aligned. My front sprocket is off to the right, whereas my rear sprocket is off to the left. The only solution I could think of is  to repurchase the rear sprocket with a conical right offset. Any other suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.

The rear wheel needs to be centered, not shifted to align the sprockets!!!
There are 10mm off-set front sprockets available.

there are rear sprocket carriers from other 750 years, may move sprocket in 10mm.

Cyclex has the info:

and you can find the right sprocket carrier on ebay.

You will need to solve the left shock mount too.  I done it, see my signature K3F is K3 frame with wheels from 78SS.

On a seperate note should the carrier sit flush in the hub? Or will there be a slight step up? Also I realized after reading the replies you guys left behind that my rear tire isn't center. Thanks for the guidance. Now to try and tackle centering the rear tire.  I'll likely have to end up shaving down the the  axle mount of the rear caliper.

Yes, you need to make sure the tire is centered first, then you can address chain alignment.
The 77-78 K and F 750s had the front sprockets mounted 10mm further to the left side than the earlier 750s. To mount an early motor in a late frame, you would use the 10mm offset front. To mount a late motor in an early frame, you would need a rear sprocket with a negative 10mm offset. There are other ways, such as swapping swingarms and sprocket carriers, but they may not apply to your situation of using an early F hub and brake on a 550.
