What is this 4-2 exhaust?
« on: September 15, 2019, 05:46:36 PM »
I just "won" this 4-2 exhaust on eBay (only $109 shipped). The mufflers scream Motad to me, but after doing a lot of Googling I still haven't found a 4-2 system for the CB500/550 made by them. The hangers and mufflers have "Made in Japan" stickers on them.
At first, I thought it used stock head pipes. But looking closer, I'm not so sure. Anyone recognize them?

They look okay, but they are 750 pipes.. for heads with studs.

Hmmm...they haven't shipped yet, so I messaged the seller for clarification.

He says that the guy he got them from (in a parts buy) said they were for a CB500.

I'll take a chance on them. I figure they're cheap enough that I can get my money back if they are for a 750.
And, I can find 500/550 head pipes fairly easy, should I want to try fitting them.

Hmmm..... I don't know,  though. Don't these pipes look just as angled?

You could always ask for the ID of the header pipe where it mounts.

It's already packed up now. What's the I.D. of the 750 vs 500/550?

I have seen a similar set of pipes for sale on CL and they were mounted on a cb550, but the seller said they were meant for a Kawi 650 or something like that.

The exhaust showed up today. There's some tiny specking of rust on the mufflers that didn't show up in the pics, but nothing some 0000 steel wool, chrome polish and elbow grease won't fit.

The good news is, I'm 99.99% sure it IS for a 500/550. The headers are 32mm O.D. and 30mm I.D.
I don't have a bike I can test fit them on, but I do have two I can hold them up to for comparison. The '73 CB500 with the 4-4 pipes matches right up. The length of the headers seems to be correct. Diameter seems to be correct. Bends seem to be correct. Mufflers look like the hangers will match up with the passenger peg brackets.
The '76 550F with the 4-1 allows me to hold it up on the RH side. Same thing....everything seems to line up!

Woo-Hoo! Looks like I may have scored on this one! Mufflers are solid; nothing loose or rusty inside. System looks nice. I really wonder who made it?

I looked at these on Ebay & wanted them for my bike. Thats cool you got them. I want to get rid of my 4 into 1 exhaust. Congrats, Scott.

I think I have this same set, that was from another member who didn’t like them and had used them briefly...too quiet. The box and mufflers indicates Made In Japan but doesn’t have a company name unless it is in Japanese, I don’t recall offhand if there was much writing on the box. It is still in box in my spare bedroom buried behind all the other boxes occupying the room. ;)
Mine are very well made with excellent quality of fit and finish details.

I must be old, because quiet isn't bad.
I just swapped out the expensive... but LOUD....D&D mufflers on my Triumph for a set of TORS. Ahh.... much nicer.
