tapered steering bearing kit
« on: September 16, 2019, 12:53:23 pm »
Hello,

After two years of delay I am finaly resuming my CB400F project.
I am ready to begin assembly but already have a problem.
I bought a tapered steering bearing kit from tour max SSH75-0. I read somewhere that
this would improve the bikes handeling. Somebody already instaled one of these?
There is no dust cover and the rod suddenly is to short to instal the top nut. I bought it with CMSNL and they
say it should fit. Just wanted to ask here before I start to make it fit.

regards

Tim

It will only improve handling if your current races are damaged.

Tim, if the stem is suddenly too short to thread on the top nut, something is wrong!!! A common mistake is failure to fully seat the lower race in the bottom of the tube in the neck of the frame. It should be recessed deep into the tube, not just flush. Make a couple more posts, then attach some pictures so we can see what's going on.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

The bottom race is al the way in the frame and fully seated.
The top race is a couple of mm potruding but that is supposed to be normal.
This kit is sold for manny models and my gues is that the spacer that goes under the bottom bearing is to thick.
I wil try to post some pictures this evening.
I was thinking on making a thinner spacer on the lathe.

Both of the kits that I have used came with two spacers. Both times it required the thinner spacer. The instructions said to pick the spacer that makes the lower/race/bearing/spacer stack the same thickness as the stock bearings and races. I have done a 75' 400 Four and a 74' CB550 K.

Just one spacer in this kit and no instructions whatsoever.
