First Post. 18th Problem...
« on: September 18, 2019, 09:02:23 PM »
Hi all. First post hear and I really appreciate you reading it.

I have a 1982 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk for which I am looking for an 18T front sprocket.
I was leaning towards the trusty JT brand and learned that their highest count is a T17 recommended for my bike (product# JTF338). The JTF288 18T sprocket is not recommended for my bike but the specs seem the same as the 338 except for a 2mm difference in sprocket width and a left versus center tooth alignment. I've attached measurement diagrams of both sprockets. Do you think the difference is negligible and I could use the 288? I called the company and they said that it was a possibility but they do not recommend it?

If not, can you recommend another reputable brand/model of an 18 tooth sprocket that would fit my bike?

Thank you much in advance...

Welcome. I've got to ask, why do you desire an 18 tooth front sprocket? The 2mm difference in alignment will eventually show in wear on the sides of the sprockets, but it's not a train wreck waiting to happen.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks for the reply, Scottly.

My thoughts exactly given the possible effects of using the JTE288. I am actually maintaining the tooth count that is already there. My current front sprocket is a T18 as I discovered today to my surprise. I did not remove the sprocket to see what make and model it was, for the major disassembly would be done once I buy replacement parts. See, I need a new chain and figured that changing the sprockets would be advisable. My current set up is a T18/T38. I do a lot of highway riding, cruising at an average speed of 75-80mph and I noticed my RPMs running a bit high. So I would like to maintain lower RPM's, hence me not wanting to decrease my front sprocket to a T17. I was also thinking of replacing the rear T38 with a T37 to lower the RPM's further at high speed.

Sprocket Specialists?

The thickness difference is due to a single shoulder on the 650 vs a double shoulder.

Hi Jerry.

Is that the name of the company you are suggesting “Sprocket Specialists”? At sprocketspecialists.com?
