About 10 years ago I was a senior manager at Nortel Networks and the "corporate culture" included drinking copious mugs of that stewed coffee that you get from the filter machines.

One day my son (who was about 10 at the time) showed me a website they'd been looking at in school. It was from UCLA and detailed what the different types of caffeine do to your body.

I decided to give up caffeine and went from 10+ cups per day to nil.   Bad idea.  I had bad headaches for about 3 weeks (I guess this was a type of withdrawal symptom)

Now I allow myself a cup of coffee every now and then, but drink decaff when I can.

Mostly I drink water.

Hell yeah, I experienced those head pounders about two years ago.

I slowly cut back my coffee addiction buy mixing half regular with half decaf until I was on pure decaf.  However, a little regular from the local cafe' is great (they roast their own).

But lately... for the past few months... I drink nothing but hot Green Tea (gunpowder loose leaf).  Wow, it is awesome and the health benefits are great also.

i've always had migraines
diagnosed causes are
lack of sleep or lack of food or hydration.
they are becoming worse as my back and neck play a sizable role too.

if i could change one thing about life... mine in particular... i would throw out the headaches
mine make me physically sick to the point of vomiting.

thanks for the reminder that i haven't had one in a few weeks... YAY

Get those migranes in check.  My wife had a couple bad ones after our second baby.  Some kind of female hormonal deal.  Anyway, at one point she couldn't remember our kids' names and could barely speak coherently.

After an MRI, turns out she had a minor stroke.  At 29 years of age and perfect health otherwise.  No lasting effects that we know of.  I think the post-baby chemicals are back in check...she's been good for about 6 months now.  Knock wood.  She was prescibed and carries some kind of super-duty pill around with her in case she feels one coming on.  It's supposed to relax the blood vessels in your brain or something.

I've had bad migraines since I was a kid too, about once every two weeks. If I watch what I eat/drink, I can now go without one for 7 or 8 weeks.

heffay, you should try writing down what you ate when you get a migraine, my doctoradvised me this. I did that for a few months and found a pattern real quick :Lobster, shrimp, pure chocolat, strawberries and old cheese are almost a 100% guarantee for a migraine for me.

My migraines quit when I reached puberty and the trigger was smoke from burning leaves. Most cities have a bylaw prohibiting it now but every once and a while I get a whiff of burning leaves and just about flip.

My mother on the other hand suffered for most of her life. That is, until she started taking Feverfew. She took one pill in the morning every day and kept a handfull available (on her person) in case she started the visual pattern. She would pop one at that time and keep taking them until it quit. Probably three or 4. It is made from the Chrysanthemum bulb so is a "health food" and cannot be overdosed and does not interact with other drugs. I got all the women at work on it and they had great results with one or two exceptions. Nothing works for some poor souls.

I use it for regular headaches too.

Funny someone should bring up the subject of caffeine, I was reading this article earlier. http://www.isma.org.uk/stressnw/caffeine1.htm

I gave up coffee just after christmas and had some really bad headaches for about a week.
Drinking plenty of water helped but basically just had to ride it out.

My bike can be repaired.
My insanity is a little more permanent.

I'd like to sympathize with you, but I can't recall that ever happening to me. ;)  Mebbe you should keep some chocolate covered beans nearby for emergencies.  I like the white chocolate covered beans.

On the topic headaches in general, I knew a fitness expert who is certain that in the US, most headaches are caused by dehydration.  Most Americans, myself included, don't drink enough water, and one of the first signs of dehydration is a headache.  People tend to wash their aspirin down with water, and the water helps.

Hi! when I hit puberty and got a whiff of "burning leaves" I just about flipped too! ;D They always seemed to cure my head aches, heart aches, haven't laughed hysterically in a day aches, whatever ailed me.  Unfortunately my city has a bylaw prohibiting the "burning of the leaf" so I don't get a chance to do it all that much.  But, like you, every once and a while I get a whiff, ad all my troubles float away.... ;)
Just kidding, but i couldn't resist.  Its that residual effect of the leaf that got the better of me! I read your post and only one thing came to mind.
I love you, mary jane.

What?? No one has mentioned "cluster headaches"??

I'm 49 and have suffered with cluster headaches since I was 22.  Most people have never heard of them, but go to clusterheadaches.com if you really want to know what a bad headache is.  They've also been called the "suicide headache".

I don't get why one would want or need to quit coffee/caffein completely.  From the little I've read, a cup or 2 a day is OK... No?
What would be the need for quitting completely?

Does quitting have 2 "T"s ?

I try to balance the effects of caffine in my coffee by mixing with a little Irish Creme.

Then I mainline some heroin...really gets me going in the morning.
