CB500K1 coil replacement?
« on: October 10, 2019, 03:58:55 AM »
Hi folks,
I still have my 500K1 and it's recently developed an issue where it suddenly drops to 2 cylinders ( 1 & 4) .  There's no hint of anything happening beforehand i.e. no stuttering etc. just "bang" and on 2!  Have checked the wiring from the Dyna ignition to the coils (only 2 connections) and have ensured they are 100%.
This issue is somewhat independent of ambient temperature or long riding, although it first showed up on a 900km ride to the SW of Western Australia and back to Perth some months back.
I took the bike for a short ride today (amb temp 22°c ) and it dropped to 2 cylinders again half way through my 20km ride!
I've had several discussions with my classic bike club members over the past few weeks, and the general consensus is that the coil for 1 and 4 is the culprit.
If this is the case, then what's the best replacement coils apart from OEM?
TIA
Andy

Andy, the parts that are most renewed when there's actually no need to, are coils. At least that is the impression I have. For some reason people tend to suspect them rightaway. I think it's because they do their work invisibly with such mysteries like magnetism. Don't get me wrong: coils can fail, but if I were you, I'd look at some other things first. How old are the sparkplugs? What do the sparkplug noses look like? What type plugs do you run. The 'R' types are not always reliable. How old are the plugcaps? Are the caps well connected to the HT wires and what resistance do they show? Five to seven kΩ is OK. Over 8 kΩ is no good.
I don't know the Dyna ignition very well, but if there's a condenser in it, know that condensers are more likely to fail than coils. You can always swap the 1+4 coil with the 2+3 one and see if the problem follows. CB500/550 owners must also be aware of possible shorting to ground either by the plugcaps or their wires. But that's the easiest to detect. In the dark you will see arcing and you'll hear the engine miss.

If you still have it refit the points plate and see what happens, i too would suspect the Dtna over the coil, dont think ive ever seen a Honda coil fail electricaly only wires short out or get cropped too much

Thanks all!  I do have the original points plate so I'll refit it and see what happens.

OK, fitted the points cam from a mate's 550 and also a brand new fully populated points plate which was sitting in my spares box!
After adjustment, the bike fired up without issue.
I'll take it for the same ride tomorrow when it played up, and if nothing happens I'll ride for a lot longer!
Temps in Perth are around 21°C (~70°F) tomorrow so should be a nice day for a good ride.
Will report findings.
