Engine 400F2 rebuild cost
« on: September 16, 2019, 07:42:10 AM »
Hello. I'am a new member of the club.  Someone could give me an idea around how much a CB400four engine rebuild would cost?

I´m not sure what´s the problem but if someone had a similar experience and could share aproximate costs around how much would be to have it done by a professional would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

In my experience it depends on the garage but typically in the thousands. 3-5k. It's a many-hour job and most garages charge heavily by the hour. If you're even a little bit mechanically minded, if you follow a guide and are well organized you can probably do it yourself without a ton of trouble. Loaner tool programs are your best friend if you don't have a ton of tools at your disposal.

How long is a piece of string?

There are so many unknowns.  Location? Shop rates? Just a top end with a hone, rings and lapping the valves? Bottom end work with cases split?

Supply a little more information.  Why do you think it needs a rebuild? Problems/symptoms? Location?

And when you say 400F2, are you talking about the '75-77 models?

Why are you thinking you might need a rebuild?

I am also planning to rebuild soon and would be curious to know costs associated (if i did it myself with some jobs like machining outsourced, if needed)

You will never know until you strip and assess the engine  ;)

I'll echo Scott's comments...it ultimately depends on what you want to do with a build, and what you want to have at the end of the day. Machining costs are the big one for me, and can add up in a hurry ($100-120/hr shop rate up here). The nice part about these bikes is that they are reasonably easy to work on, so the more you do yourself, the less it costs to rebuild everything...buy at least 2 paper manuals to reference, check in here a lot for questions (this community is AWESOME) and use Youtube (lots of good stuff and I keep forgetting to try this as a source of information). As previously stated most likely 2-3K assuming that there's no major damage inside. Bearings/seals/rings/valve job/gaskets/carb rebuild.

I got a 400F engine rebuilt by a very reputable shop known for good work on old SOHC 4s for around $700 labor. I had two engines that I dropped off, one extra that I bought for $150 in case they needed spares, and another that I had torn down and painted. Didn't need any extra work like machining, and the oem parts I needed were probably around $300 or less in total.

This was in Phoenix in 2011 or so, and the shop is no longer around.

$3-5K seems pretty excessive to me, but I guess it depends on where you are and what a shop thinks you can pay, as well as what work the engine needs. But thinking about hourly rate vs how many hours it would take to do the job (and of course depending on what needs to get done) I think you could get it done for less, unless the shop is charging $200 an hour. The shop rate I paid was $60 or $70 an hour, IIRC.

$3,500 ballpark is what a local shop told me they were charging another guy with a 400F for a full rebuild. I saw the engine when it was in buckets (absolutely no organization, a little scary actually) but it's back together now. I should have asked what it came out to. I know shop rate here is about $100/hour.

I see Josep lives in Spain.
Engine rebuild costs in any other country will be irrelevant I feel.
